Ah, toe straps

Yes, me hiked right out in my planing Fireball, crew fully extended on the trapeze (steady!), streaking across Portland Harbour in a mist of powdered water. And then my toestrap broke. A backward roll and the next thing I know I'm being towed along by the mainsheet which is still wrapped twice around my hand, while Powerful Pete shouts "Come back here immediately". Fortunately, without my considerable ballast at work, the noble vessel slowly tipped in to leeward, catapulting Powerful Pete into the mainsail. By the time I caught up, it was fully inverted, so we lay on the hull for several minutes, creased up. 30 years later we still find it funny to recall.

not funny at the time....

being a cheapskate, i avoided mainas in the caribbean so i forgot that they are usually stern-to with anchors out from the bow. going into a marina in the dark by ding i cut the corner and went under a superyacht's chain, thereby almost decapitating the crew.

Stepping onto tender with 2HP Yamaha in hand when tender decided to play bucking bronchos (something to do with wash of gin palace). Net reulst was left arm hanging onto tender right arm under water refusing to let go of said 2HP Yammy. Screaming between mouthfulls of salty water to crew consisting of wife, sister, brother in law and then 4y/o daughter (all of whom were getting ready to go ashore in the cabin). As screams got softer and hoarser daughters head appears on transom with bemused expression. After pleading softly and gently with her to go and call mommy (took a few meinutes to convince her I was not playing a game or swimming with my clothes on) brother in law appers to give me a hand up ( motor still firmly grasped in right now numb hand). During the Post Mortem (over a large shot of brandy) the obvious question had to be asked as to why it took them so long to come to my assistance. The Answer ? Im still waiting on that. Luckily 2HP yammy worked after a dry out and a great day on the beach was had by all.
