ive hit a bit of a snag...

unsure if this is the best section to add this.

im looking at a boat that comes with a trailer... however the trailer needs a complete overhaul to be road worthy in my view.

in terms of transporting home, i can only see 2 options.
a, have it all lifted into a truck and moved
b, fix trailer on site and take home.

its over 3 hours away, has anyone used a scottish company which could shift a boat and trailer on a flatbed in 1go?

I don't know any Scottish transport co's but I used uship.com. Enter your details of where from & to, plus any other info and companies bid to get the job & saves having to hunt for them. It worked for me & might for you too.

Try John Sheppard, very experienced.
And yes I have used him.
His phone number is on the interweb.
Angus

+1

John Sheppard will provide special low loader for keel yachts and can arrange a crane. He may not be suitable for as trailer and boat combination load. But try him here john sheppard boat transposrt

Fraser Dunlop has moved boats on flat beds before and provide teh tractor unit with HIAB crane. I used one of their HIABS to lift my 41' / 12 tonne yacht onto one of John Sheppard's trailers. Call Fraser Dunlop and ask if they can provide flat bed and HIAB tractor unit to lift your combination trailer / boat, its lower cost than truck and separate crane hire. http://www.fraserdunlop.co.uk/id2.html They are helpful people.

I would not recommend a boat transporter operated by 'Ala(i)stair Adams'; a google search will reveal why.

It depends how big the boat is, I was trailering an 18'er a few years ago when a wheel bearing collapsed. My AA recovery policy rocked up and got it on the flatbed to my final destination. I'd not recommend this but .......

If a 26 foot motorboat, then a flatbed with a hiab (Galt Transport or whoever is local) may be the most economical option, but make sure the operator is experienced in boat transport (and trailer).
Best regards
Angus

ive actually email galt earlier this evening. ive no idea on what kind of cost to expect. i remember my dad having a larger boat shifted up the country rather than 150 miles.

obviously the end game is once the whole lot is with me id have the trailer refurbed and readied for road use again

Just wanted to add my name to the list of happy JS customers.

Also, to say that choice of haulier will be a very local thing. Scotland is a fairly big place after all. See if you can find someone based near one end of the journey.

im going to speak to our local haulier here, not sure they have the right combo of machines but they maybe able to help.

I bought a boat which had a strong but not roadworthy trailer due to having solid axels with no springs. To get the boat home I used a caravan transport company who winched my boat lashed to its trailer onto their lorry.

Unless you are in a hurry, its going to be cheaper to refurb the trailer and use that. You'll be refurbing it sometime anyway....

i guess i need to have that discussion, i dont know how long i could leave it there to be worked on. im more a fan of overseeing such things myself, rather than via email/phone but yeah ideally that would be the most cost effective way round

http://jsboattransport.co.uk/ I have used these people and found them very helpful. Best of luck!

Many thanks folks!

I think a plan has been hatched.... Just awaiting the last of quotes coming back but cost wise is not as daunting as i had in my head to have the lot shifted as is.

If its not too late, and you live near Inverness, have you had a word with Jamie Hogan at Calley Marina? I transported a 32' ketch from Caley Marina to Tomatin using local transport, can't remember the name now, but it turned out Jamie used them as well. Was quite cheap, used one of Jamie's cradles and a hiab onto a flat bed.
Mike

Added bit,
DON'T lift the boat onto the transport by lifting the trailer, it will puncture the boat. Tie the trailer to the boat and lift the boat. It's the same procedure if using a cradle.
