So following up from my previous post regarding our trip, I thought I would include pics of some of the boats that caught our eye whilst we were there.
So here goes.
First as seen off Pampelone beach, the chopper seemed to ferry people from somewhere not too far:

A Couach and an unidentified large sportscruiser:

A lovely old Riva:

and some newer and bigger ones

P1020065.jpg

And a very new beautiful one!

P1020009.jpg

A large RIB:

P1010973.jpg

Now hold on, the words infront of the make ‘SACS’ read T/T WHO CARES, so actually a large tender!

This one is a Riviera, a common make down there and I never saw an ugly one.

Would you want a boat with Wally written on it, these people did, each to their own. The first seems to be the must have tender for the larger yachts. The second a large cruiser.

Fancy a Cigarrete?

P1020063.jpg

This one is an Apache 42. Twin 1000hp petrols giving 95mph. You could hear it miles away. As the owner said to me ‘This boat really rocks man!!!’

P1020081.jpg

A passing rooster tail:

P1020177.jpg

And the St Tropez dust cart boat that went around the anchored boats collecting bags of refuse!

P1020219.jpg

And finally a little display that occurred every evening between 5pm and 7pm where this little helicopter buzzed all the larger boats returning to port taking their photos, hoping to sell the pics to the owners later.
He ignored us every time seeking larger and more wealthy pray!

This is a lovely boat up close, owned by british chap and his (maybe) (thai?) wife - we drive past him each day to en route to the sea and he always gives us a wave and says hello, he was also out when we walked past his cars on the way to the private beach, he recognised us from the boat and said hello - he has a mini and a land rover both bought from dealers in London and imported - might get asked for tea one of these days /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Believe he also owns the Pershing 51/56 that is perked next to it - easily the biggest house on the row i reckon...

The boat in your first pic belongs to an american, Wayne Heisinger, if I remeber correctly it's called Floridian. We saw it moored up at the Miami Boat Show last November, with Paul Allen of Microsoft's boat behind it, whilst doing the taxi boat ride round the intercoastal canal. According to the guide blokey he owns a company (amongst other things inc a football team, hence the american football helmet on the tail of the chopper) called Waste Management and he's made millions from it. Owns several large houses on the canal, with various family members installed in them.

Attached a photo of it last year, very impressive boat.

Can I ask how your car coped with towing the boat down there ? I'd love to take our Regal 2150 down to the SoF but I'd been put off by it's 2 tonne all up weight on the trailer. However you're towing with a Mondeo, which surprised me somewhat as I use a BMW X3 that really struggles !!

The unidentified blue sportsboat is an Itama 56. The house with the new Riva is the house Francois Spoerry (PG architect) had designed for himself when the port was built. I presume from the slipway you were based in PG sud?.

u r nearly close

it is one of the first versions of an Itama 54 (1980's)
if the pictures shows correctly the stern is modified to a slanting
as all Itama still as of today have a sexy timeless squarish boxed stern
I must admit the modification from this picture does not look bad, tough as an Itama purist myself I might be totally wrong

love the Wally Tender but all also the Wally Power 70 timeless future design

watch for the 2007 version in the next Cannes Show...

brilliant pictures keep them coming /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Regarding the towing query. One of the main reasons I chose my boat was that it only weighs 1250Kg, so add 450kg for the trailer and allowing a bit of gear we must be up to near the 1800kg limit of my company issue deisel Mondeo which copes fine. A 65mph mway speed returned approx 27 mpg.
The only time I need to be carefull is when recovering from steeper slipways where we either come up at an angle or use a long length of rope to keep the car on the level ground at the top. We had to use the latter at PG.
Your X3's towing limit may be lower than the Mondeos, a listing I found suggested 1700kg, and your boat will certainly be heavier than mine so you could be towing over 2 tonnes which would explain the apparent struggle, suggest you check what your figures actually are.

You are correct aml, sorry B175Chris, it is PG Sud. We were on Ile des quattre vent.
There are a few slips that we checked out, they are all fairly steep and seem to have a drop off at the end.

Cheers, that explains it. I'd always worked on a towing limit lower than the car's weight and a bit of googling brought your boat/trailer weight at 1900kgs, well over the actual weight of the car so I was a tad surprised. Hadn't realised Ford specified a higher towing limit, that's very useful.

I guess saying it struggles is a bit harsh, the X3 copes with our boat albeit it could do with being remapped for a bit more oomph. Like you, I'd use a rope to recover boat & trailer from the water unless the angle was shallow. Needs to be the 3 litre dismal version to lug it out of the water without resorting to a rope really.

Am I right in thinking you managed to rent somewhere with a mooring at the end of the garden ??? If so, where on earth did you find it ?!?!

Floridian

Yup, it's Wayne Huizenga's. He was involved in Waste Management Inc, and Blockbuster Video, and other businesses. The boat is Floridian, ex Aussie Rules, Greg Norman's boat. Mr Huizenga has nicely got rid of the red trim paintwork that the boat had when it was Aussie Rules. It was at the Monaco GP this year with a F1 car on the aft deck

You are undoubtedley towing illegally, in the UK at any rate. The Trailer Gross Weight must not exceed the Vehicle Towing Limit of the the vehicle as defined by the manufacturer, which you will find in the handbook and on the vehicle plate.
The maximum Trailer Gross Weight includes the trailer and load, including any thing carried in the boat.
If you are towing illegally you are not insured

Best check out the regs http://www.ntta.co.uk/law/preparing/preparing.htm.

That's why we're looking to replace it with something bigger. TBH after years of towing heavy plant / trailers with 4x4's I hadn't even considered the X3 wouldn't be up to it, given that it's heavier than the boat & trailer combo and that BMW sell a towbar rated to over 2000kgs (which is the one fitted to our car). It was only on looking after I first towed the boat the couple of miles to the yacht club that I realised I could've saved myself the towbar costs and put it towards a better vehicle /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
