You would not want to sail in the Hamble anyway

I might. I sometimes sail up the Itchen as far as Kemp's, then use the engine for two minutes just to get into my berth. It's a fun and different challenge to sailing in open water.

Tacking through the Hamble moorings might be pushing it, but with the wind on the quarter, say, why not?

One more question to PRV: are there decent chandleries in Southampton?

Thinking outside the box for a minute, the nearest chandlery is probably in Hythe Marina. No idea what its like as I've never been but it shows on the marina website. Dinghy across if youre brave or use the ferry that runs from Town Quay - then you get to have a go on the little train along the pier on the Hythe side :)

Brilliant! Google Earth says that's only 1.3 nautical miles. That's certainly dinghy-able in reasonable weather. I would love to start using the dink in place of the car. I'm liking this more and more.

Last time I checked, the Hythe chandlery was just a stock of 'basics'... nuts bolts, fluids etc... it wasn't a full chandlery as you might expect. this was a couple of years ago though so it might have changed... best to check (there may be other outlets in the 'village' complex now as well).

As has been mentioned, the nearest chandlers to Town Quay is at Shamrock Quay.

I also live nearby and it wouldn't bother me to be wandering around TQ area at night... no worse than any other city... best to be careful in areas like the Polygon and Northam though (check Google Earth), but the main city is ok.

Still the same limited range of products unfortunately. It is run by MDL as a "service" to berth holders as I understand it, so not the same business arrangement/drivers as a normal chandlery.

LOL. Yes, it's officially banned, I suppose for yachts with motors ...although you will see someone flaunting the ban from time to time.

Sailing on the Hamble is not outright banned, but is covered by this:

Sailing
There is no Rule against sailing in the River but the prudent yachtsman will have his motor instantly available and lower sails when the fairway becomes overcrowded. It is unseamanlike for a yacht or dinghy to hoist a spinnaker in the congested waters above the Warsash Maritime Academy.

Shamrock Chandlery should certainly be walkable distance and in my experience is one of the better chandleries to boot. I've walked it several times from Ocean Village which is only a few hundred yards from Town Quay. Never collapsed from exhaustion yet and I personally wouldn't make the distance a negative consideration. On alternate Saturdays your hike will have the added attractions of calling in to watch a Saints match or chatting amiably with the friendly away supporters especially if the match is over and they've lost.

Cheers, Brian.

Old But not Forgotten

I've had my boat at Town Quay for five years and stay on it most weekends, summer and winter. Last year a new management team replaced the old security and maintenance team and I must say a lot of us were skeptical at first but 9 months on Lex (Manageress) and her team of 5 guys have more than improved the placed, they've made it into a Marina not just a floating boat park it seemed to be before.

My wife and I have never had a problem with parking as there is dedicated boat owner parking available and as for crime I've certainly never witnessed anything, but for piece of mind the Quay is manned 24/7 and one of the marina guys even escorted my wife to our car late one evening. :)
