That certainly shows the importance of having the bow strapped securely to the trailer /forums/images/icons/wink.gif A lot of people forget about that, so if you were to have an accident or stop ever so suddenly, whoosh, the boat could be flying over the rear of your car, or in my instance with now flat back, through the rear screen. I have a flat bunk trailer and fix mine front and rear with straps and an extra safety one on the front /forums/images/icons/wink.gif Now if you had a roller coaster one, well you could have the boat roller coasting right over you. Perhaps a lesson to be learnt from this poor guy, although SWMBO thinks it is a set up /forums/images/icons/wink.gif
Where were you today Derek? weather was brilliant, we went over to Southend for a cup of tea /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Happy1, I see many boats being towed around with just the winch line holding them on the trailer. I have also over the years come across several boats on the side of the road which have come off their trailers. On one occasion we got 15 km up the road after seeing one and came across a stopped car with an empty boat trailer and a very puzzled driver - he had just realised he had lost his boat - we were able to tell him where it was!
Regardless of the misinformed comment of someone who thinks you are gazing at your navel, I am in complete agreement that for other than short tows an extra bow strop and at least one at the back are essential. From what I have seen, admittedly out here in NZ, many don't do it. People also tend to forget also that if the boat comes off, it may be the guy coming the other way who gets it through his windscreen.
hear hear I have no end of 'argument' with people who believe that the need to tie it down or make sure it doesn't far off backwards when simple physics says the most likely issue is holding it back on braking / impact.
I ran ratchet straps back from the tow eye to trailer beams about 4 foot back - after it had been pointed out to me I have to admit!
Thanks to both of you for the kind comments, unfortunately there are people towing every day who do not realise the implications. The momentum of say a 1.5 ton boat and a sudden 'stop' without straps on, could be catastrophic as the boat carries on, more than likely riding up the roller on the post of the trailer, leading to a dreadful accident. As you say it is usually the innocents that suffer at the hands of the foolish or those that don't care to research about towing. Any fool can go fast with a trailer, stopping safely and understanding the braking distances is the clever bit /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Driving on the M8 a number of years back behind a car with an inflatable on the roof when suddently it came off. It bounced in front of me and straight over the roof of my car. Thank God it was at the exit for Glasgow Airport not where I was going at the time but it gave an exit stage left and one hell of a fright. Make sure your load is properly straped!
