I suspect the OP read about the same case as I did, where as I understand it the circumstances were roughly this: Owner was involved in an accident (not towing at the time of the accident) and substantial claim.

Yup, that's me. I've been towing things around for the best part of 50 years with never a thought...

I wonder, can one take out an insurance policy for everything that covers you in the event of your insurers not paying out for something???

I've always checked that my insurance covers me for towing, but never considered the towbar to be a modification. Having Googled it clearly I'm very wrong!

I think a policy to cover you for everthing that your insurer might not pay out for would be way to broad. Or maybe you've just invented a new product for the insurance industry, 'Cover-me-all includes your home buildings and contents, health, travel, cars, pets, mobile phones etc. etc,' :)

AIUI you can't insure against anything criminal. I'll guess this includes withholding information from your insurer - they do give plenty of clear warnings in their quotes and documents.
