Following Mirelle's comments about TT, I bought myself a copy. Wow, what good product, no wonder it has won awards. It is not cheap, at about £80 with £50 annual renewal of tidal info but the tidal information is in a different league to all of the other products I've seen. Heights, flow directions, diamonds, local information. It will even tell you when the times of safe passage over shallow bits and whether you will be doing it in the dark or not.

Probably not a product for SB curmudgeons but worth a look if you are in the market for a tidal programme.

I have Belfield Tide Plotter which gives much the same info including graphs for all secondary and standard ports around the UK from which you can read off height of tide at any time, and it will do all the calculations you can possibly need.

Ihave Belfield too, and a great product, but it comes nowhere near TT in terms of what it does, tidal flow directions etc, and heights over specific areas - it only gives tide heights for ports and certain secondary ports

I have had TT from whenever they dropped the price from astronomical to £80. I agree with what you say, as far as it goes, but you will end up wishing it were overlaying your chart, for even manual planning.

To use for passage planning, it really wants to be integrated with some charting sw. espcially for offshore stuff, like what is happening out at some swatchway in the thames estuary.

Haven't tried TT is there a sample testing prog about?
Use the Neptune plotter planner and their tide progs. on my PC and old laptop on board.. The planner part allows you to pre plan the voyage and takes account of tidal diamond info.. It will tell you the best time to set off on a particular day..and what mag. course to steer for whichever way point or route you select..
I have no experience of a proper plotter but this prog. also allows me to connect the laptop to the GPS and shows where I am at any time on the laptop.. Its nice to look back and see all the errors I made in course decision making when I get home .
I have most of my cruises on the PC and can even display them as a huge list of Lat/Longs!
Charts are not detailed so when one gets close it's over to paper again.. It is really good and lasts until 2050 ( which should see me out!)
Also play with Autotide Gold which is no longer available but my prog. is good till Oct 2007.. That allows you to enter secondary port info. all over the world.. and it seems ok
Belfield, I find great for a quick estimate.

And yes, I'm a sucker for these sort of progs!!
Cheers Bob E.
Oh and of course I have no connection at all with any of these companies
( Unfortunately)

Help required with vocabulary

How do I know if I am an 'SB curmudgeon' or not, and hence should I be looking at the toy you are discussing?
