any ideas on the cheapest GPS that can have external ariel, have NMEA output and run from 12v external all at the same time- handhelp or fixed? or can soemone give me one, i promise to use it wisely and love it forever!!!!!!!!!!

I have a Garmin Etrex handheld. I get a good signal inside the cabin except when its under the VHF radio. Its about £100 and you can get a 12 v power and NMEA data cable for about £30 (i'm not sure its nmea out though)
If you have a laptop you could get a gps reciever that plugs into the usb port. Available from ebay for about £40 plus import duty as they come from singapore. I think you have to get a chartplotter software progamme to get the nmea output

Don´t have one, but you surely get one...
ebay - search for - Garmin GPS 45 (8 track) GPS 48 (12 track)
Have had both, all features you mentioned, reliable and GBP 50-100, depending on condition an d mood.

garmin 12LX . The LX has nmea and external aerial ( although mine works fine without it) so it works with my DCS VHF set. 2nd hand is tempting but IMHO no good for electronics you rely on.

Phone me 01522 877979 or 077997 43920. I have a Furuno on my boat (see website). It works fine, but I've a Garmin Etrex Legend which I use. Whereas I can't exactly 'give' you it, you may have it reasonably, or swap with something.

Doubt I'll get lost from Bardney Lock to Boston on the Witham<grin>.
