The recent post about the Deben entrance prompted me to dig out an old 1956 copy of Jack Cootes East Coast Rivers.
Then the entrance looked fairly simple, you cut close to Bawdsey point and headed straight for the Ferry Boat Inn.
However, Jack Cootes recommended that you signal for the pilot [presumably by semaphore or cannon] and paid the 10 shilling fee, thus giving gainful employment to a grateful servant. [I bet he doffed his cap as he came aboard too]
Apparently he could only justify this expense for the first passage of the season though.
