Thinners for Polyurethane 2 pack paint.

I've runout of the supplied stuff and have one more coat to put on, dare I use acetone?
I would not. The risk of buggering up the whole job are to great. The correct thinner is a mixture containing chiefly 1-methoxy-2-propyl acetate and 2-butoxyethyl acetate

I may be wrong, but I would hazard a guess that OP is unwittingly on the right track in that acetone would be a solvent for those acetates.

I would think it very likely that both are miscible with acetone but the Op was presumably asking about the advisability of adding acetone to his paint system in place of the correct thinner.

Oh dear it will have to wait then and send away for correct thinners; the three coats already on and over the two coats of epoxy applied will need to be rubbed down/ abraded before the final application.

As if I haven't been rubbing in between coats enough to get a good flat surface.!

The last of the supplied thinner was needed to clean up a drastic spill, well,------- more a shower as the drill driven stirrer in the pot was taken too high and showered the whole workshop except where my body shielded it. Rubber gloves didn't save the penetrated fleece and shirt beneath, all the way through to my body, which definitely needed cleaning up!

I didn't want to go sailing yet in any case.

You used the thinners to clean it off yourself

5 litres of acetone obtained and more importantly 500ml of thinner. What a difference, The paint flows well and brush marks dissappear and I don't mind extensive cleaning of the expensive brushes bought.

Answered my question and much improved result. Thank you all.
