I have just received the renewal for the RYA asking for the small amount of £28 per year for me to continue my membership.

Now, I'm not tight and will probably send them my cash, but should I?

Re: behind the scenes

Hmmm..I didn't get round yet to renewing for this year. They invoiced me £50 for my personal membership and I felt sure it was a mistake, but have not got round to chasing em up to find out the correct price

Difficult to price/value what you get. But apart from the magazine they do a fair bit of behind the scenes stuff, eg a pretty fine job last couple of years (and nice Sail for Gold Ball in London) in supporting the creation of the British olympic team, with obvious fab results, so don't forget about all that

Re: behind the scenes

Also don't forget the continuation of the tax exemption on red diesel. 3 Olympic golds and 2 silvers is also good. They could however have a little more on motor boats in their magazine. I also remember that when I had a legal query they were very helpful. All in all not bad value.

Re: behind the scenes

And dont forget all the thousands of courses they've invented.
For all sorts of things that just used to be cauld
common sence.
I watched three kids and a bloke going round in circles in a rubber dinghy. Each time round, a different kid got to tie the
dinghy to the pontoon.
Must take about ten lesson before they get chance to use the motor!!

Re: £3 discount

Ah by coincidence bank statement just arrived and I noticed I have in fact just paid for this year, by DD. It was £25, so I suppose it's £25 by DD and £28 otherwise

Nice to hear the positive responses.

The perception of RYA is still that they are sail biased, but they do do a lot behind the scenes that affect both power and sail:
Red Diesel,
Boat Safety Scheme review,
Legal advice,
Negotiating on navigation aids (buoyage, etc)
Retention of Coastguard cover,
Cruising in company,
etc.

I am only slightly biased, as I sit on the Motor Boat Committee. It is a bit buracratic but they do try.
