Someone must have been inspired by one of the "Flook" cartoons!

Coo, is there a Flook archive? It had jazz associations, being drawn by Wally Fawkes and written (amongst others) by George Melly. After a BBC jazz recording I said to George in the pub "Didn't you used to write the Flook cartoon?". Although he was on his own at the time he just said "I still do" and turned his back! Sorry, George, RIP...

Nothing like as exciting, but I checked all round, saw nothing from horizon to horizon an any direction. Went below for a SH1T. When I came back on deck there was a container ship across my bows about 400 yds away.

Not my finest hour.

Happy to be corrected but i always thought nothing on the horizon to container ship bearing down on you is about 17 minutes

17 minutes to get out of my oiies, have a dump, get back into them, get back on deck is about par for the course. I'm not a spring chicken. I may have checked my position and put a mark on my chart as well.

Sadly, there isn't. There's quite a lot on there from private enthusiasts, but nowhere near a full archive. I had to scratch around quite a lot to find the storyline I remembered. I think the Daily Mail holds the copyright, and have neither republished them nor released them.

I think most of the stuff "out there" is from the only collection I'm aware of, which my parents had - the one with the green and white striped cover.

Similar thing coming out of the Medway going into the Thames, passing Canvey Island but still on the south side. I had a friend on board who was helming (with autohelm he was mostly looking forward) while I sat back against the cabin looking aft while talking on the phone. He goes past into the cabin saying something and after a while I realise its been much longer than it should have been with him not there, I look forward and find we're heading straight for the side of a coaster motoring down river. And to my left here comes the harbour master launch. I styled it out by altering just a few degrees to pass close behind the ships stern like I was meaning to cross to the north side at that point and my friend was still on the toilet when we bucked violently through the ships wake.

It was a salutary lesson in the dangers of having crew, the assumption that something is being taken care of when it isn't. Of course better communication could have solved it but it wouldn't have been an issue at all if I was solo. Then I know if I haven't done something it hasn't been done.

1999 ARC:
Skipper of a small racing yacht, not an official ARC entrant (wouldn't pass the safety standards), was washed overboard, pulled out of the water several hours later by an ARC boat alerted by the Mayday call.

Around the same time, an African stowaway on a merchant ship was discovered by the crew in mid-ocean, and to avoid legal hassles they threw him overboard. He was picked up again after several hours swimming alone in the open ocean.

Both men were picked up BY THE SAME BOAT.
