I wasn't listening on 16 I moved to the channel they recommended (sorry can't remember which one, might have been 23) for central Solent. As I have already mentioned I was in the docks area (just off dock head as it happens.

The signal was very broken up. I get the same issue around the upper reaches of Southampton Water so it's probably a line of sight thing as VTS are nice and clear on 12.

Lee on Solent Aerial doesn't transmit MSI. So if you are in the Solent proper you will struggle.

Channels: Boniface Down, St Albans Head - 23, The Grove - 84, Newhaven, Needles, Beer Head - 86

Without a chart to hand I'm not 100% sure which aerials ate nearer you. Needles to Southampton... Always gonna be an issue.

Not a real Solentite I just sometime have to transit it. So the phrase 'The Docks' doesn't mean much. assume that's Southampton...

Is this worse than before the change?

I'm not sure that they are, actually, though I could well be wrong. I believe if you are subject to GMDSS you have to fit Navtex if coastal (and Inmarsat if ocean-going), so presumably those are the official GMDSS ways to get MSI (including weather), and the Coastguard broadcasts are a bonus for us non-regulated folk.

As you say, Coastguard broadcasts are the only option for many of us mid-Channel, though to be honest I'm not exactly how I would *use* them. By the time I'm far enough out that they're my only option, I'm pretty much going to continue unless the forecast is really scary, and hopefully that's not something that comes out of the blue in the few hours since I looked before setting off.
