Some may remember a noob arriving here a couple of months ago, with the usual round of "Which boat?" questions. Then the usual "I've just bought a boat but it won't run..." stuff, followed by a "Dare I go out in the Solent?" thread.

Well he did, and we met up with Gary in Lymington after he towed his Bayliner down and got installed in the campsite. He wandered over on Saturday night with his two boys and a cute Jack Russell and we had a couple of beers before agreeing to meet up on Sunday morning. "I should be clear of the campsite by 9am, so we'll be on the water for 9.30," he assured us as he left at midnight...

Anyway, around 11.30 we were over in Colwell Bay and we got a text to say that he'd had a problem with the engine, but it was now all sorted. "Come out of the river and turn about 45* right," says I, "and you'll come straight past the old fort and into the bay."

Now, when he eventually turned up, I did promise that I wouldn't post on the forum about the fact that he managed to miss the Isle of Wight and called me to say he could see a large balloon (Bournemouth Pier). First time out, I guessed that a little leeway on the navigation was OK. So they got over in the end and rafted up while we had some lunch and the kids did a bit of swimming. I also promised that I wouldn't post about the fact that his mooring lines fell off and the boat started to drift off and had to be rescued (good job we had the tender in the water).

Eventually, we swapped boats and headed off back to Lymington (SWMBO was itching to have a go in the Bayliner):

Now, for those wondering why I went back on my word and published details of Gary's little faux pas, I'll leave him to explain later, when he gets online...

Either way, a great weekend!

You're still waiting for him to return your boat???? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Al.

We were also Lymington on Saturday. I think we saw you in Colwell Bay as we passed en-route to Alum Bay at about 12:45.

Let's just say the weekend was 'eventful' with a somewhat meanderous learning curve... Thanks for the tuition Graham, I'd have ended up in Torquay without the tug on the reins /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif a stronger tug on the ropes wouldn't have gone amiss either /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I've some mobile phone video footage of Susan during the boat swap but am having trouble uploading it.. here's a couple of smaller files for now... Good Father's day memories.

A most excellent weekend and although there were a few negatives like pranging the trailer wheel on a bollard not two minutes down the road from Lymington, waiting 6 hours for the recovery guy and getting home at 4am.. on balance, a weekend I wouldn't want to change.

Great to meet you and yours... looking forward to the next time /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif which is likely to be this weekend to get the boat back after the trailer's fixed.

Pop over next time, we don't bite...

Sadly your track record suggest the contrary.
Welcome to the club!

If I'd had realised it was you we would have! As you say Colwell was a bit deserted but I remember noticing just the one FB anchored up......

Alum was quiet too; less than 10 boats and no loony waterskiers.

Me thinks Gary identified Hurst as the Fort..... rather than Fort Albert.....?

and one of Susan having a play in my little boat.. certainly prooves the engine tweaking I've been doing seems to have done the job.

Boat Swap

A bit (alot) juddery.. curtesy of my lad's camera technique /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

we took the boat back out after we said cheerio Graham as the tide was too low for the trailer.. did 30 and bottled it as well /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Sorry about the quality of the video's.. there's some good moments in there but lots to wade through to get to them /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: oops

Doh!

Gary, perhaps a good idea to carry a spare trailer wheel and a trolley jack!
When I was trailering boats a few years ago I learned the hard way too!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: oops

spot on of course.. I must admit I thought about it and chanced my arm for this weekend.. never again, I'll be taking a spare down with me when I pick the boat back up.

Great people down that neck of the woods, one guy drove 4 miles to his lockup because he thought he had a spare that I might be able to use, alas, it didn't fit... would that happen in Milton Keynes? very much doubt it.

It's worse than that - he was even wearing my sodding sweatshirt when he took off!

BTW.. Graham, I'll be taking several pinches of salt with me to counteract anything you say won't be posted on forum's in future /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Need to buy list is growing:

Compass.
Springy warp rope.
Trendy wooly jumper
Spare wheel
More food to contribute to lunch
Salt (see above)

/forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Cheeky sod, that was a proper marine grade crew shirt, that was.

As an aside, if I were you I'd get maybe 20m of 12mm 3 strand polypropylene rope and cut it into two equal lengths for your warps. If I get really nerdy, I'll show you how to put eye splices in them...

Really Graham? Did you perchance mean Polyester? Mebbee Nylon? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

You've missed out charts and a handheld gps - oh, handheld VHF for the next time you get lost.

And I recommend some bedtime reading such as
Solent Cruising Companion (£15 from Amazon)
and the RYA Boat Safety Handbook.

That's for starters!
