It's true that 80% of boats never go beyond the harbour mouth

[/ QUOTE ]

85% of all statisics are made up on the spot.

[/ QUOTE ]

76.4% of people disagree.

[/ QUOTE ]

That decimal point just added oodles of credibility to your statement /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I was tempted to go with two decimal places but that would have made me appear as sandal wearing beardy bloke.

You mean that you're not??????? I don't believe it! (VM mode)

Funny how these interesting threads degenerate into nonsense intit? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Well that's me done, Fair winds all! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: Misanthropic, curmudgeonly Victor Mildrews

Well, from what I am seeing here, I'd far rather mix with the 'solent toffs' than the grumpy old gits slagging the place off!

Re: Misanthropic, curmudgeonly Victor Mildrews

Actually, maybe a series of races could be arranged, to sort this out! Grumpy old mud crawlers in manky old boats full of smelly oily rags v. solent toffs in their pristine brand new Mustos and their gleaming white BavJens!

Slight problem the Solent toffs are all wearing SLAM this season. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

As long as it's organised where the water isn't deep enough to give me vertigo, anything over wading depth can get a bit worrying for some of us! Would be even worse where the water was clear enough to see through.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thank Heaven, that makes me a Solent Prole then- faded 'pink' cotton trizers n faded grey(once blue) jumper. Piccy of cap censored by Moderator. I talk "Norf n Sarf", plums are for eating or jam, or damson gin!
SWMBO & I don't have matching oilies, shore gear and the boat isn't spotless and we sail between September & March!

Course, the big problem with the Solent is all the Midlanders charging down the motorways and keeping the prices up for a Solent mud berth, instead of going to the cheaper mud of the West or East Coasts.

Why do they do it? Can we get tolls on the M3 & M25 to subsidise South Eastern berth holders?

Why do they do it

Presumably it's an acronym. Let me try to guess:

Snazzy Luxury Amazinglyexpensive Merchandise?

Silly Laughable Antisun Mudproofs?

Snooty Lingerie for Atavistic Morons?

Slimy Looking Accoutrements, Maybe?

No, I give up... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Beats me why anyone wants to stop after just 4 hours.......

I go sailing for the sailing, if I want to go and do shopping or go to the pub, i'll use the car or the bus! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Forgot to add....

I've sailed to Ryde, Cowes and The Folly (complete with dancing on tables), no ambitions to do it a second time!

I'd reather sail almost every W/E in the season, and a few W/Es out of season, than 5 or 6 times a year because it's a 5 or 6 hour drive to my boat. So I choose to sail 2 hours from where I live.

Those folk who either live close enough to their chosen sailing area or can move to be close are very lucky IMO.

Of course when I retire it won't matter that it's a 6 hour drive, the 6 visits can be a month or more each.

Close friend of my fathers who did Berlin Air Lift with him ... lived at Kingston upon Thames. As a kid I used to go to the house and look at the lovely Thames Motor Launch he had tied up at bottom of garden. I vowed I would do that one day ...

Just a quiet stroll down the garden ....

and then step on ...

Image011.jpg

now with proper jetty built to one side ...

quiet river cruise ... returning in the evening with sun setting over the house ....

Solent - Yes I like it and in fact anywhere I can sail. Can spend all day on the river - wide, long and deep ... or drop mast, under town bridge and out into baltic ... That'll do nicely.

The one thing I'd never complain about is the generousity and friendliness of the hosts of my Solent weekend! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

............but coming back from the Folly was like a carnival procession on the M25! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

£30 a year, they must have seen me coming! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Expensive Tommyrot. Our moorings are free.

Mind you they are sandwiched between a coal heap, a steelwoks, a power station and a sewage works. And a bit muddy too. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Foreign country (England that is /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif ) about 30 miles away

Sounds like I'd feel right at home there! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm opposite the docks and have a muddy ladder after descending the grass bank.
On the way downriver I cross the Prime Meridian somewhere between the council tip and the sewage works, one on each side of the river so whichever way the wind is blowing the scent is wafted your way...... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

We had to be nice to you as you kept panicing whenever you saw another boat...

I was amazed when you said you thought the act of rafting up was a myth! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Cheers
