In the OP i just tried to mention what a cracking day out we had had and that the Solent is a lovely place to sail in. So is the Med, The Western Isles and almost anyplace else with clean water, a bit of wind and maybe the occasional sunshine.

Remember what Ratty said to mole? Well it applies anywhere. I am amazed at the misanthropic, curmudgeonly Victor Mildrews that seem to ooze out of the mud at the mention of The Solent. Why on earth can people not just accept that boating is all about 'different strokes for different folks' and be very happy to enjoy just that.

Maybe before the Internet people just propped up the bar at their local club and never emerged before the big wide world. Now they have an outlet.

You are absolutely right, some of us have been indulging in a bit of mickey taking, but it is good natured you know. These forums do often seem Solent centric, and it seems that some of those that sail in the solent don't think that anywhere else is any good?

For my part, I think the Solent is over rated, very expensive, and sometimes not very welcoming unless you have the right plums in your mouth, but that is just my experience, other people may find it different. Really, it doesn't matter how, what, or where you sail, as long as you enjoy it when you do.

I am one of those people to whom marinas are an anathema, I like peace and solitude, I tend to point my bows to where I know I will get it. Some like the social interaction of mixing with others, but it's not for me, the forums is about all I can manage, probably because it's fairly anonymous, and I can just switch off and walk away when I have had enough. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

But isn't that because more people sail there than anywhere else so it is bound to come up more in the posts.

And the Solent doesn't have its own section where the 'hooray-henrys 'et al can post about the world centre of sailing. Maybe there should be a separate Solent board like there is for the East Coast sailors?

I am exactly like that and I still find I can 'avoid' people in the Solent. In fact, when I want to go out the only person I need to speak to is the bloke with the crane to tell him to lift her in and out. Once out on the water I can watch the world and his missus go bye and nobody bothers me.

East Coast started as a meeting forum, just grew from there.

I would support a Solent Forum, at least we would know where to look and who to target. Ahem.

No it isn't and they don't......surely you can't believe that the sum total of sailors in the Solent out numbers the sailors in the rest of the UK?? If you do believe it you need to get about more /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It seems to me that some, not all Solent sailing folk, think that somehow the Solent is superior to everywhere else, which is plainly a nonsense. However, it takes all sorts, and whatever floats your boat is ok by me really.

You are quite right to say that there are not more Solent sailors than everywhere else, but, IIRC, there are more boats per mile of coastline in the Solent area than anywhere else in the world. It does, therefore, follow that there is likely to be a lot of Solent business on these fora.

From my point of view the Solent is a great place to keep a boat, I'm never short of somewhere to go and for hols etc we can go wherever the wind blows, be it the West Country or France/Holland. 100's of continental boats seem to agree.

From your point of view it isn't great and that's fine by me.

Ah yes....The floating caravan syndrome, but you get that all over the country, always strikes me as a bit odd? It seems that there a great number of people that want to own a boat but don't want to use a boat. I think it applies to mobo owners more than raggies though, possibly because mobos are more akin to caravans, than raggie boats? (bit of a troll)... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
