Re: Martyn\'s Law, Wignall\'s Corollary?

This must be giving those clever buggers in Sweden food for thought. Is there a professional journal in which we could publish our findings (I am happy to share co-authorship; if its good enogh for Crick & Watson its good enough for me).

Alternatively we could present a paper to an admiring audience at an appropriate academic conference (suggest Guiness tent at LBS) :-)

Re: LBS

We could, indeed, do so at the London Boat Show, but perhaps we may be better waiting for SIBS 2004, where we could follow the lecture with a practical demonstration...

Re: Martyn\'s Law, Wignall\'s Corollary?

Ooh, careful bout that sharing thing. Newton managed to bag a whole load of copied out stuff from an applied maths book and call it all his own. So if you don't watch out there will be a Wignall's Second Law in a moment all nicked from my thread and your idea! Nobel prizes are quite a few quid, you know. Also, i think they just ring you up, no long boring thesis required. Also, you might come a cropper on the requirment for som axshul research...

Re: LBS

ah but LBS is on the thames. No problem cocking it all up there, and it will deffo be the case that nobody knows about boats cos all eastendy types who only know about pubs, caffs and motors.

Re: Wignall\'s Second Law of Mooring

The volume produced by a given combination of skipper and crew when mooring is inversely proportional to their skill.

The Skill Index (SI) is defined as the product of the sum of all crew members' shouted volume measured in decibels, multiplied the maximum engine revs used in close quarters manoeuvering, and can range from 0 to in excess of 750,000 dBrpms for a tetchy husband and wife combo with a large audience.

Wasn't a problem for Crick and Watson. Much of their paper about the structure of DNA was extrapolation from somebody else's research (a woman, as it happens, tho' I can't remember her name).

I've heard it said that if they were to submit such a paper for publication in Nature nowadays, it wouldn't be considered sufficiently rigorous, scientifically, to get published.

Progress, eh?

Re: Wignall\'s Second Law of Mooring

see! And i wonder what the units of measure of a skill index will be instead of DbRpms? Eh? Wignalls! Bad slipup here though - the larger the SI rating the higher the number, in Wg's. Which means the more useless the more Wignall's. Oh dear. Mind you, i suppose very fat gits exert loads of Newtons of force, so at least it's immortality of a sort.

We will now have to ortgainse a statue somewhere in central london, but seeing as scultors are all a bit rubbish these days i recommend he should lie down in a bunk in a sleeping bag so he doesn't end up with stupid looking hands or feet. Hm, cept it'll look like a statue of a tramp. hey ho, i reckon that'll guarantee that his statue will be in that spare spot in Trafalgar Sq.

Re: SWMBO\'s Sub-Clause

Julie,

That could be a good third rule.

I know when I cock up a mooring, it's prob some pretty 'Blond thing' that's stood on the quayside (or next boat) and my thirst to impress her has left me feeling like Reginal Molehusband!

(how's that for showing your age!)

Re: Wignall\'s Second Law of Mooring

"the more useless, the more Wignalls" - have you been watching us moor, then?

"it'll look like a statue of a tramp" - it's been said before, mate...

Overall, I think I prefer a logarithmic scale, so an SI of 0 would rate at 0 on the Wignall Scale, a muttered comment on an otherwide perfect approach (40dB) would be a 4.4, an approach with perhaps two hushed comments (70dB each) and a max of 700rpm would rate a 4.99, and a full-on cockup with husband wife and two kids screeching at each other and both engines repeatedly hitting 3000 rpm would rate 7.02 on the Wignall Scale.

Units of Measurement

The rate at which a body descends from a floating object into water is measured in COLINS

The volume of unwanted and unexpected explusions from holding tanks is measured in HAYDNS (represented as Hlb)
