Re: OB rating

Come on Jimi , follow Wakeup's instructions VERY carefully and you should find that you can get 3 Gorgeous Grannies on a TT but no OB's ... if based in the Solent I think you max out at 4 though as insufficient room for them and their zimmer frames.

Note to Jimi ... Blackwater tanks and Saily Boats not mentioned. ZERO OBs and not even a self respecting GG ( unless she had a nasal disorder) ...

Re: OB rating

See it works alright, althoug isn't TCM's boat in the Solent at the mo?????

Japanese Rope Sex

Learner, you're bang on, Raggy = Absolutely No OB rating too many ropes see.

Unless of course you are into Japanese Rope Sex, then I spose a Raggie could qualify somehow..

TCM in Solent

Oops I forgot that ... L23 currently languishing at 11 ( and Essex girls at that !) .. think I'm in trouble for that one.

Re: Japanese Rope Sex

Ahem, with raggies, you've forgotten the aging wooden boat effect. Show 'em some varnished wood, wooden masts and the like plus them nice glass raised roofdeck lights and loads of leather down below and I'd reckon that you are probably looking at an OB rating of LOA/20, or 15 if in the Caribbean.

Re: TCM in Solent

It's worse. LS23 is in the Solent AND has soltron. Could be the first ever Rodriguez boat in single figures....

Re: Japanese Rope Sex

Nah, you are more likely to attract Brown Owl types onto boats like this. Quite a different species and always prepared for a different kind of action.....

Re: TCM in Solent

Yes you are currently right correct , but I suspect that on reading of his downgrading he has hot-footed it to the boat armed with Black & Decker and toolbox and is manically fitting Arnesons as we write. This is the only conclusion I can deduce for his silence on this (and any other ) matter this afternoon.

Cat or Volvo

Gludy you should probably ask around some more but imho the D12s are outstandingly good engines. Top D12 is 715hp btw:

1. D12 is very fuel efficient, smoke free. Cat probly is too?

2. D12 is incredibly quiet. The Cat has a louder exhaust whoooar tone. On our flybridge the engines are near silent (quietest f/b I have ever been on) whereas the cat boats I have been on are quite audible. Bigmoose's new Hattan 56 with Cats is quite a bit noiser than our boat, and a seeker 55 carmargue with Cat 660s is also noisier. With your plans for longer passages, mebbe 5+ hours at a time, minimising noise should be a big priority. Noise however can be affected by boatbuilder exhaust design, as much as the engine design

3. Service intervals on D12s are 12months/400 hours (so long as you use low sulphur fuel, but all European marine diesel qualifies for the 400hr AFAIK). I dunno if the Cats stretch that far, but if they dont the volvos might save you money. The valve clearances are needed on the volvo at 150 or 200 hours, then every 800, as discussed before. I have an itemised bill for our first annual service, in Word format, showing every single gasket and screw, I'll email it so you can examine the cost breakdown

4. Volvo warranty is 24mths leisure use

I dont know enough about the Cats to give you a full comparison. Others might be able to chip in

Re: TCM in Solent

It either that or he's been locked up again. I did see a black maria going past with a wan little TCMish face peering sadly out. Apparently caught in the commodities market trying to unload copper and purchase lead for pencils to service potential BOs

Re: Cat or Volvo

jfm ... thanks, this is the sort of advice I find really helpful.

I am now investigating.

Does anyone know about the latest Cat 700 hp engines?

I can tell you that Trader are abandoning their underwater exhaust system and going for a double baffled Heland Marine exhaust system out of the back. This is because of the new RCD on noice - you have to run the boat at a fixed distance past someone at full throttle and have less than a certain Db noide level otherwise you cannot sell the boat!

This releases a lot of room enabling them to leave a lot more space around the 700hp engines. They are then going to gel batteries and moving them out of the engine room - this enables them to move the stablisers further back and improve performance.

Anyway all this means that if i take this route, it will now be with the 700 hp engines.

Re: Cat or Volvo

I emailed you the service bill stuff on the D12s

FWIW fairline use halyard exhast silencers on the Sq58 with D12s. Not underwter exhausts. The silencers are huge, outside dustbin sized. Whatever they do, it really works

Re: TCM in Solent

Just taken this picture. Two of the buggers being unloaded at Port Solent. I think Matt is going for double points.

Re: OB rating

OK, so I reckon as follows:

F37 (38.5') gets a basic OB of 9
corrected for flybridge = 6
European (well, Kidderminster) = 7
460hp on tap, so max OB = 5 (if I understand correctly)
less 2 for using Dom's Snake Oil = 3
less 2 for being UK based = 1

Bummer. So where do I apply for my OB, then?

Si hoc legere scis, nimium eruditionis habes.

Re: Cat or Volvo

The Squadron 58 with D12's - low noise maybe due to the halyard system. Trader are going to fit these and abandon the underwater exhaust - so how much is silencer of your 58 and how much engine?

Paul

A 44 went down near the moorings near ours at St Catherines, Jersey east coast.
In a huge unexpected easterly gale it broke the chain and ended up on the rocks. After trying to haul up onto land at low tide the bottom of the boat (complete with engines) fell out. Mission abandoned!

Re: OB rating

Sorry, that's the way the nookie crumbles. You don't apply, you should automatically attract corresponding number of OBs to your boat by virtue of its configuration and location..............so what your saying is that whilst your rating is 1 you have so far attracted none, oh dear..... /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

As independent as resources permit.

Re: OB rating

So what you are saying is that my 20 year old italian 45 ft Flybridge have
ob =10 (45 ft = 6.71x1.443) /3 and x2 = 7
+ 2 for Italian = 9
based in the UK, not Solent = 7 ... not too shabby for a mature lady I'd say....
