Or fit a repeater such as the Raymarine Graphic Repeater for essential information and put up with the shortcomings of tablets, which is what I did.

Thanks. Its a good thought but I'm wary of making too many more holes in the boat! So I just wondered about such a tablet outside.
I have a NASA repeater for the essentials.

We've been pretty happy with our Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 3. Charges via pogo pins in the cradle, so no need for cables that are always in the way.

Runs Orca, Navionics, and OpenCPN without issues.

Any tablet can be made water-protected by use of clingfilm ... you can still use touchscreen.
Sunlight visible though will always be a problem - even with so-called viewable units ....

No need to spend silly money ... I have a Headwolf Android unit ... twin SIM .... fast processor ... good screen ... SD card .... GPS ... WiFi ..... at a lot lower price than a slower Samsung ... and way way cheaper than an iPad !!

Check out Banggood ....

My plotter feeds into NMEA2WiFi unit (about 40 quid) ... which then outputs via NMEA ... USB cable ... WiFi .... giving multiple choice ... to my Acer One small notebook and to my Android Tablet ...

Tablet runs Navionics App ...
