I am planning to visit Symi for the first time this year and I must admit am a bit...anxious of the so deep harbor. Any hints/tips? Any particular areas to avoid or to prefer?
Thanks

Any particular areas to avoid

imo Symi harbour itself.

Dreadful place. Awkward to moor due depth and no lazy lines = anchor and back up. Almost guaranteed to get a fouled anchor no matter how careful you are. Hideously noisy due to unsilenced mopeds & general traffic metres from boat. Totally open to the public, no privacy on board.
Wash from ferries if at outer end of harbour. There have been reports on this forum of over zealous bureaucracy on the dockside recently. Someone else will no doubt know.

There is a much nicer and less crowded bay on the other side of the hill to the SW but holding is not wonderful due stony bottom. Its OK in calm weather though a stiff walk over the hill into town. edit = Pedi

Better, go to Panormittis and take the bus to Symi town if you are that keen to see it. Panormittis is just f a b u l o u s!

I have been to Symi many times and never had a problem with retrieving the anchor or crossed lines (last there in July 2012).

Yes it's deep so you need to drop the hook in the middle of the harbour with plenty of chain / warp ready to go.

As stated, the harbour has a street all round with lots of shops etc and traffic, but that can be part of attraction. The South side of the harbour is significantly quieter in that respect.

I must admit I would now only go there because it is a port of entry - but where else can you buy some wonderful herbs (and sex tea- no I am not kidding you).

Not this year but was in Symi last july. We enjoyed it very much, spectacular buildings and lots of bustle, good fun once in a while. Berthing stern-to just the same as everywhere else, except the marineros insist you only use 'your' two bollards, so you don't get someone else's warps across your passerelle. The depth is not a problem, just ensure you have 10 -12 metres of chain out before you begin motoring astern. I think the water at Poros may be deeper but no problems there either.
