Have bought a curly expandable hose pipe and used it without problems over the bank holiday at two marinas. Thanks all
I can see the convenience of those hoses but I have heard of early failures. I would avoid using it with the nozzle closed resulting in the full mains pressure being felt, in fact I take the same precaution with my reel hose.Have bought a curly expandable hose pipe and used it without problems over the bank holiday at two marinas. Shotley - we have hoses.

We use the expandable hoses and to be fair you need to let the full pressure build up to get the thing to the right length but having bought one new in the summer of 2020 it failed a couple of weeks ago. So in reality less than two seasons use. That said we bought a new one because they are easy to use and stow and whilst I would rather they last if they are actually a life limited item we will probably just replace when we need to.
I would recommend getting a test on your water first.First time poster, long time reader of the east coast YBW Forum.
Having just spent 2 weeks at shotley marina sailing the local waters, I was horrified to discover that we had filled our water tank with water that appeared to be contaminated with some small black floating objects? See my photo of a coffee cup filled with water with small black objects in the bottom of the cup. We did of course use the hose pipes on the dock and did run them for a couple of minutes before filling the tank as standard practice.
We were allocated a berth on the L pontoon that seems to be mostly used for small fishing boats. I reported the water issue to the lock operator who told us he was unaware of the water issue on the L pontoon and advised us to use a different water point, he couldn't really help as the management were not on site at the time the discovery was made.
I haven't made any formal complaints yet, however I'm now considering we might have been drinking possibly contaminated water? Furthermore we have a water tank that needs a good cleaning and purification to allow us to use it again safely.
Any thoughts on how we should approach the issue?

This is an example of what is available:
ITS Water Quality Test Kit
Once you have the results you can assess what is required to rectify it.
Our first one lasted 4 years, it's replacement only months but we live aboard and they get more use. Still have one but now use a through drum reel type for preference and the expandable is kept as a spare and as a 'longer input' connector to the drum reel one if needed.
When the expandable ones blow it is truly dramatic.![]()
Well having posted this last week our new expandable hose sprang a leak the following day! I should have stayed schtum! ?
