SWMBO / HWMBO

Surely it is from that very scary African lady - 'Ayesha' - the one that lived for 1000 yrs or so. Definitely one to be obeyed.

That was 'Er Indoors' , Rumpole put SWMBO on TV. Not a lot to choose between them, I agree.

Rider Haggard novel 'She' --(aka 'Ayesha):

"down on to thy hands and knees. We enter the presence of /She/ , and, if thou art not humble, of a surety she will blast thee where thou standest."

She who must be obeyed is probably Cockney slang.

Made popular by 'The Minder' TV series in the 70's (?)

And what would SWMBO rhyme with then? Not all London slang is rhyming - and anyway, as someone has already pointed out, Arfur Daley gave us 'Er Indoors.

You know how you marry this shy young girl who defers to your wishes and happily lets you re-build your motorbike engine on the kitchen table? And you wake up 30 years later still married to the same lady who now has all the flexibility of Jo Stalin and a corresponding power of command . How you find yourself taking refuge in your shed or boat - or failing that in premature deafness? Well you might have started as He Who Must Be Obeyed, and you have ended up married to She Who Must Be Obeyed. In all irony, there is some truth.
