How much usedul info did you get from your surveyor when you bought your boat?

I got a detailed 40 page report; a set of specific recommendations and actions; oil sample analysis results; and a verbal discussion on the merits of the boat. Also several follow up questions and queries answered.

I've had surveys done on my boat for my own benefit. Been 'assisting' the surveyor each time and learnt a lot.

I've have found it good to have a professional view of my boat. Each time the surveyor has made allowance for the fact that the boat is old and standards nearly 50 years ago are different from today.

How much useful info did you get from your surveyor when you bought your boat?

Nothing important at the time, but then there was nothing really wrong with the boat. Subsequent insurance surveys, on the other hand, picked up one or two important issues which I had not spotted (and a few non-problems to fill up their recommendation list!).

The surveyor should provide you with a list of what he is going to cover and what his report should look like. The real value however comes from being there while he carries out the survey so that he can explain what he has found. You will learn far more about the boat this way than just reading the report.

My late father ordered a Freeward hull and deck for home completion in 1971 and had to call in a surveyor as the mixture covering the keel area had not cured leaving a sticky mess as the bilge area.The surveyors report was accepted by the builder and with the agreement of mtfather delivered a 45gallon drum of resin plus hardener and a massive roll of CSM……which did for all the GRP work he did and cured the sticky mess as well!
