There's an awful lot of niggling and carping going on in this thread. And a certain amount of academic snobbery too. Bit ironic when most of the posters drive power boats.

So why not have a friendly response to Student?

...err, that would be because I, for one, am pretty confident that Student is not a student, and that if he is, the quality of his 'research' is extremely dubious.

Even if his research came out firmly in favour of extending the derogation (which would suit me), there are so many holes in his approach that it would be impossible to substantiate his findings...

Moreover, I don't think it's academic snobbery... It strikes me that it's some people who do know a bit about how to do research 'outing' someone who plainly doesn't.

Further thought...

The absence of any sort of response from Student, the fact that even the title of his 'dissertation' was wrong, and the comments of the (yachting) VC with whom I had another of those super Senior Common Room lunches last week, all add up neatly to the conclusion that he's a fake...
