Sunken small yacht, Newton Creek IoW

I’m sure there are NT bylaws , you can’t go dumping trash or pinching the roses
Fine him £100 for littering? I don’t know offhand if the NT owns any more sites like Newtown, I doubt they foresaw such an eventuality. New ground is being broken, I am glad they’re not reacting too quickly. Damage is done, best consider a good, fair and repeatable response.

With the resources of the NT you would have thought they might wish to clear such a location of a wreck if the owner doesn’t have required ability to contact a local yard etc to effect a recover etc. i cannot believe it’s beyond the resources of many island yards to assist though. I assume it’s really a question of costs -I suppose the wreck of the mobo who enjoyed the hospitality on the island beach hut one night still remains cluttering up the foreshore (I haven’t been to west wight for a while though)

Quite excusable. We are there now, his boat is more of a mess than is quite believable. So much so it’s no accident, he has clearly festooned it with as much useless debris as is physically possible. It is almost as if he’s trying to spoil it for people on purpose….. does he have an agenda here.
Last year when he was down near the Shalfleet end, both boats were covered. I did see him make a bike out of 3 wrecks of bikes one day.

I think that his agenda is to live as cheaply as possible and Newtown is one sheltered place where you can't be charged for anchoring.

That’s my take on it too. The original sinking was pretty irresponsible, I’m surprised the NT haven’t turfed him out over it TBH
I don't know the specific location and rules, but do the National Trust have jurisdiction over the seabed area?
It often gets complicated with different jurisdictions to high water mark, between high and low, and beyond low water mark.

The NT can't charge for anchoring so probably don't have jurisdiction.
I wonder how the guy gets water. The only tap I know of is at the far end of a long bridge on the path to Newtown, a hell of a carry.

Yeah, it can't have been purchased from JSO because they started in 2022 and the boat was err... shabby chic pink, in 2018, at least:

Extinction Rebellion Sadler 29

Google suggests JSO did have a dreadful pink yacht but it's very obviously not a Sadler 29. I'd be amazed if that ever returned to the sea. Google says it was called "Berta Caceres" anyone know what it was?
XR had a pink Silhouette that they used at the Fawley protests in Southampton. I overtook it on the M27 being hauled by an old Hilux.

The pink Sadler I last saw at the 2022 Southampton boat show when it was beating aggressively towards the pontoons until its course was ‘actively corrected’ by a show patrol boat.

‘The system’ sadly seems to let people fall through; there was an old boy living on a Moody 28 on the berth next to me. Hes been taken into the care of the local authority, with the Moody abandoned and no longer paid for in the marina. The marina team have, at my request, moved it as I wasnt keen in having an uninsured vessel in unknown condition alongside.

Maybe I’m a fool - the 5G in Newtown is excellent, I don’t mind the walk to the field for water and it’s very lovely in winter with the heating on watching the seals. I could happily live and work from home for free at anchor there. I’m even an NT member :ROFLMAO:

He fills his water from the tap behind the NT hut and dumps his rubbish in the NT bins.

I'm not sure of his black water set up though.

The NT have had to deal with different legislation than a normal harbour with byelaws etc and suitable notice has had to be served on him.

He's ignored all comms from the NT who have now organised divers to refloat the wreck, expect work in next few weeks. They intend to invoice him for this but chances of payment are low/non existent.

Straight into the 'river' the same as many old boats.

Whatever happened to “ leave nothing but your footprints”?
Dumping boats in beauty spots without making any discernible effort to clear up own mess crosses a line

I rather doubt that it was his intention to sink the boat there. As for cleaning up your own mess, I can't imagine that anyone who has the means to remove a sunken boat would choose to spend a winter on a small boat without mains power.

Yes, he lost a boat - his home and possessions. Yes, his current boat is unsightly. Yes, the NT and most of us, including me, would like to see the back of him, but I can still find some sympathy for someone whom life has pushed into such a position. I suspect most here are better off, but there's a lot of people who are only a few bad decisions or strokes of bad luck away from a similar position.

That view is not shared by the people I spoke to since he was able to swiftly unstep the mast after the boat was sunk and so their view was some preparation may have been carried out prior to the boat sinking. The mast is now ashore in a yard.

The virw around here is that his ‘gain’ is our loss. He is attempting to ruin the day for as many rich yottie bastards as possible.

Is there any evidence he dislikes Yotties? I've exchanged a few words with him one one occasion and he was perfectly friendly to me. I sensed no resentment at all. He kept the boat near me for a winter, kept himself to himself and caused no trouble for local boat owners (beyond the boat being a bit of an eyesore).

If he wanted to obstruct Newtown Creek he could legitimately anchor all his boats in random awkward spots, far better than sinking one and no comeback on him at all.

Seems far more likely it sunk accidentally. There's plenty of legitimate grounds to criticize him without resorting to exaggerations or fabrications. We should stay grounded in facts.

Really, so he has has no agency in his life choices?

I’m pretty sure the sinking was accidental. It’s his other lifestyle choices which are designed to offend. For instance, in spite of losing almost everything, his new boat was almost instantly loaded with piles of useless and unused junk. That look is entirely deliberate.
