Am I right in thinking The Beeb now get their wx. forecasts stuff from Meteo-France....? And are they better for that?
I have given up on weather from 'meeeedia' outlets as complete waste of time. The very nice people along the road at the Met Office do a really informative forecasts on YouTube. They do keep using the silly phrase 'deep dive' and given the amount of water in the local fields is just a tat worrying.

As a non French speaker I take great delight as Mrs Sandy translates the Meteo-France forecast from the daily regional newspaper when on holiday. Phrases like 'the sea is a little agitated' are of particular delight.

No. Some years ago the BBC contracted its weather presentation to MeteoGroup - Wikipedia a commercial meteorological firm. In principle, they were free to get information from any other Met service as well as ECMWF. In practice, however, they are heavily dependent on the Met Office. As in (all) other countries, the national Met Service is the national meteorological authority. Weather presenters MUST promulgate warnings issued by the Met Office. Their main source of information is the Met Office. The most obvious demonstration of that is the radar imagery, actual and predicted. The TV displays are precisely as on the Met Office app.

MeteoGroup has been taken over by TBG AG - Wikipedia and, subsequently, by DTN (company) - Wikipedia

I am not sure about the BBC Weather app. However, noting that it gives a 15 day forecast, it is most likely to be straight from the NOAA GFS. MetroGroup developed algorithms to derive weather information from NWP output.

En passant, clearing up another common misconception, MeteoConsult has no connection with Meteo France. It is (or was) another private weather organisation, based somewhere in Central Europe (Czech Republic?)

Forget the cowboys. They can only get weather information from national services an fiddle around with presentation.

Old fisherman here used to say "you listen ter they bleddy forecasts bwoy, you'll either starve or drown".
A half remembered folk song about a reluctant fisherman in the days of sail.
Always looking for an excuse to stay ashore, the song went "do you open the pane and pop out the flame to see how the wind do blow"
He would open the window and stick out his candle, if it blew out, too windy, if it stayed alight, not enough wind to sail.
Sounds like some members of my yacht club.

Hello Frank,
Meteo Consult is owned by Le Figaro newspaper press group.
They also own and publish Bloc Marine, which is promoting all Meteo Consult products to an (imho shameful) extent: everything weather related in the Bloc Marine will redirect to Meteo Consult products; there is no mention of Gmdss/Meteo France bulletins, no mention of vhf diffusion channels and schedules, no mention of BMS/Gale-Storm warnings by radio, etc etc. So much for they calling themselves best sailing guide for France.
I stopped buying it years ago for these very reasons, happy to be corrected if they have changed since.

My spoken French is still only a little better than O-Level but I can read fairly well. To do them credit, MF have a useful app, For an iPad and For Android. These are easy to use and have several products. I am sure that Mrs S will be only too happy to help out.

We're they free, one part of the government forced it to put it out to tender and take the lowest bidder then complained when another part lost the bid.

All government departments charge each other on a “commercial” basis, ie not just staff costs. It was a BBC commercial decision to change their presenters. The Met Office will be charging for their information in the same way that they charge the MCA. The Met Office did not like losing the contract although I think that it was sensible to do so.

Don't quite know why, but Brittany Ferries has cancelled friday's 1400 from Plymouth, Daughter now has to get there for 0900 minus 90 mins. General disruption I suppose. Nuisance.
The Pont Aven came right down channel before runnng SSE for Roscoff. Not that rough,I'd have said.
Daughter felt otherwise.

Thanks, Roberto.
I think that I knew who owned MC. However, when I have had correspondence with them about sources of forecasts, the replies were from a Central Europe type address. I still think that they are based in that area regardless of ownership. However, the real point is that they are NOT part of MF.
Needless to say, they were extremely vague about what forecasts they use.

PS. Somewhere in the depth of mu mind, I seem to recollect that there was another MeteoConsult that was one of the firms, OceanRoutes was another, that got swept up my MeteoGroup.
