I've made some very smart boxes in stained marine ply, and need to stick some Treadmaster to the tops. I had one go at it, with SealoCrete Con-Pact (usually a good product, it's a contact and impact adhesive).

Sadly, even though I was careful to clamp a 'sandwich' to the surfaces to hold the Treadmaster down, a few days later big air pockets appeared. So, off with the Treadmaster, clean up the sticky mess, cut new bits to size etc, and now, try again...

So, esteemed fellow lovers of the briny (no, briny, not Briony), what have YOU used succesfully? (...and I'd rather not spend a fortune on the branded stuff).

Nick's right you should try either Bostik 2402 or Dunlop S2000, both are two part polychloroprene contact adhesives, use two coats exactly as per the instuctions and you won't get it up again without a hell of a struggle.

I believe Treadmaster supply their own water resistant contact adhesive of which I have no experience. However, they also recommend the use of epoxy glue (their own but I would assume any would do) for fixing Treadmaster and while we did not use Treadmaster on our boat, we did use epoxy to fix the flexible deck covering that we did use. We have never regretted doing so.

It should be applied to both the covering and to the deck with a notched scraper, rolled down and the surplus, which should exist and be allowed to run out from the edges to seal them, cleaned off with methylated spirits.

I would be wary of suggestions such as Sikaflex as the edge bonding of the covering is important and needs a high bond strength adhesive, or else the edges will lift during service. Even with epoxy this will occur in places where the epoxy has not fully wetted the edge for a proper bond.

I would have thought that the makers of Treadmaster would provide recommended procedures and advice if asked.

Treadmaster

supply their own 2 part epoxy adhesive.
They also do a contact adhesive but only recommend it for areas protected from weather.

I have used other (SL systems) 2 part epoxies fairly successfully, but you do need a high viscocity one.

I have some Immitation Treadmaster supplied by a Technix of Southampton. They supply Bostik 2402 to stick it down.

Treadmaster look-a-like!
Was it inexpensive, is the tread pattern the same "diamond' /squished square raised pattern or the smooth type?

It was certainly cheaper. A mate donated it for his contribution to the sailing kitty so I can't tell you how much. The pattern was Raised Diamond Just like Treadmaster but it is a Rubber material rather than the Rubberised Cork of Treadmaster.

Try "http://www.technix-rubber.com"

I put self adhesive treadmaster on my boarding ladder steps which came unstuck after a couple of months. I then cleaned of the old adhesive with spirit and stuck them on with No Nails adhesive. They have been on for 12 months in all weathers with no problem. The only difference is that the steps are made of plastic.

My second boat had Treadmaster applied with impact adhesive that had broken down over the years, resulting in extremely unattractive and hazardous curled edges. It took me a whole winter to scrape the remains off. I then stuck a complete new deck down with the correct adhesive and it is still there in perfect condition after about 15 years. The epoxy may be expensive but it works.
I have also stuck down Marinedeck with Sikaflex and it has worked very well, firmly in place after 10 years. However, Marinedeck comes in strips 50mm wide (in my case) whereas Treadmaster comes in big sheets. Sikaflex may not be quite so effective for large areas.
