Has anyone experience of this problem ?. Which option shouild we go for?
The problem: The glass stern tube has collapsed again inside the Volvo rubber packing box after a poor repair. The effect of the tube being soaked in water for a year with a large fracture will be to weaken the whole length of the tube.
The design of the Tempest stern gear, does not allow for much room between where the stern tube emerges from the cross member and the gearbox coupling
Two possible solutions:
EITHER: A ) The Stern Tube needs removing completely replacing it with a Volvo Shaft Sleeve (45.35) which gives an outside diameter of 52mm fitting the existing rubber packing box (45.40) exactly in conjunction with a matching Volvo stern bearing for plastic bonding (45.39), bonded strongly with woven e-glass mat to the hull.
.
OR B) A metal insert is bonded inside the full length of the existing stern tube. My concern here is ‘ will there be sufficient clearance inside the tube for the 25mm shaft”? , given the flexible Volvo mounts, as exactly 52mmm outside diameter is required to fit the Volvo seal. This solution would probably require that the cross member being moved aft.
