Right you knowledgeable lot!! Englander has a very strange drive/stern gland arrangement, I will try and describe it. The drive from the gearbox, goes to a large (10" diam) universal type joint, with a short shaft held with caphead screws to another large universal, which is mounted on a thrust plate to the hull/engine bearers by six bolts, this looks like a standard halyard type of heavy duty system (early) it then goes to a coupling, which is held to the main shafts by two pins(?) which tajke the drive. I dont know how these couplings come apart, which is one problem. The stern glands, have a normal packing, fed by a greaser, but extending off the standard packing into the boat, is a short rubber sleeve, on which is mounted another "packing" which has a lip seal inside, again fed by a greaser. Has anybody any idea what the hell system I've got and who made it? I need some advise/spares/ The shafts are 2 5/8" bronze. The boat was built in Kent, near chatham, so it could be a naval system, the A brackets are naval, they are stamped with the old "crowsfoot". I need help with this, thanks chaps.

No idea what you've got there Colin, but maybe worth giving C & O Engineering in Newton Abbot a ring 01626 67782, they specialise in sterngear.

I tried them when I was in Dartmouth, they think it's an early halyard or homemade system.

How are the pins arranged.....do they pass through the centre of the shaft or are they off to one side as in cotter pin ...if so if the pins were removed would the coupling be able to be 'split' in to two like a spider coupling with the individual halfs slid along the shaft, one each way?......the second seal sounds like the last owner didn't like the idea of the packing gland having a drip....bit belt and braces maybe? Also try these people.....long old firm who work in small medium commercial.....01482 329185 (Woodwards)

Thanks for the number, I'll call them. Thee pins pass through the centre, just plain pins, at an angle to each other. The coupling appears to be split, but I cant move the damn thing and have tried a cold chisel, but I daren't beat on it, for fear of damage, as I'm in Spain, I'd have a job getting somebody to manufacture new ones as I'm sure they are internally splined and ledged at the drive end. The shafts simply slide out of the couplings when you remove the pins and slide out of the boat. The shafts are 21' long and 2 5/8" bronze, so it's a heavy arrangement. I'm sure the couplings must split, but ................How? I think brute force and ignorance might be required, thats why I would like to source some spares, first! Were I in the UK, they'd be off by now! I know quite a few good machine shops there! Thanks again for your input.

Haven't a clue about your shaft system BUT have used a firm only a few hundred meters from you in Port Vell. If you go past the tower for the cable car pass the new construction site on the left and carry on through the very slight dog leg and past the bus turning circle on the left there will be a long low building on the right with a metal doorway with a small pedestrian access door. They work with shafts from 20mm upto at leat 200mm and will make you any kind of tube/stern fitting you require. I just can't remember their name but the Spanish for propellor is included in the name on the door way. There is a bell/intercom to the right hand side.

The foreman, great guy, doesn't speak English but you'll understand everything he says. Girl in the office speaks good English and usually gets in about noon.

They mmade me a new 11/4 shaft, tapered to suit existing prop, with new anode nut etc. for under half the price of a Vetus shaft. They love cash and no VAT. Well worth a visit just to look at what they do. Office is upstairs and as you get close to the steps you'll see all the brass foundary items in that area.

Their Tel No: 93 221 8052

We come back to Barca on the 3rd June if you need anything fetching as long as it weighs less than 15kgs.

Hope this helps,

Phil.

Thanks Phil, I'll get on my motorbike and go up and have a word with them. I don't need anything right now, but thanks very much for the offer! Forgot, I'm now in Vilanova, out of the water. At Mikhails' place.
