We've got to be careful here, or we risk the appearance of a mob targeting someone who dares to be different, push the cost boundaries, and take risks few of us would even contemplate.

But if we go down this route, what next?

1. No business advice please unless the forum has indisputable proof of disposable assets > £5m, £10m, £20m?
2. Oh, and no racing tips unless the mods can verify all credentials first, including a top-three place in a large national class. Same for electronics advice.
3. And of course no trip anecdotes please without a Coastguard signed AIS certificate in triplicate.
4. Then there's the due diligence; what about poor old JM when the Post Office tells him to fit an industrial sized post box? Not to mention his irritation at being confined to the upstairs of his house as 20 forum admin-elves cheerily grind away below!

No disrespect to you rotrax, for you're a sensible chap. And in many ways this forum is a great resource. But surely we cannot adopt a position that a poster is guilty until proven innocent, a notion so contrary to British principles of jurisprudence and seamanship?

i've trawled through this sorry thread which has served to remind me why i rarely come here these days other than for the rather enjoyable rnli threads.

this place is quite nasty with far too much willy waving and oneupmanship.

as you so eloquently point out, this has become a group attack on one guy, something i have often been subjected to myself in the lounge. compared to that rough house where you learn to roll with the punches this place is more about avoiding the knives.

i neither know nor care whether bs is full of bs but i think it's time to ease off. this has been a relentless attack.

Firstly please don’t assume it was me who locked any such thread.

Secondly, there’s a strict rule about NOT discussing moderation. I know it’s annoying and in the past I’ve tried to be open and sometimes tried to explain things but FAT has pointed out that in his extensive experience of online forums, discussions about moderation are a waste of time. People NEVER believe the truth or try and twist things round or believe there’s some skullduggery going on and so FAT introduced the ‘No Discussion Of Moderation Rule”.

In reflection it makes a lot of sense but I can understand it’s annoying for others.

If you’ve got a problem, the appeals route is to the editor.

As I stated quite clearly many, many posts ago, If half of what BS says is true, respect, he is a superhero.

His boats are undoubtedly strong. He may only spend a couple of hours each year maintaining the finish/paintwork.

He may have been successful in extinquishing a fire by shutting his hatches. He may be able to build a strong useable block from scrap in 20 minutes at a cost of a couple of dollars. He might weld galvanised sheet steel without getting poisoned by using a bit of hosepipe.

I spent 45 years racing motorbikes all over the world. A world full of NVQ level 6 bullshitters. A truism I learned to trust was very simple, and I shall apply it in BS's case.

FAT is Forum Admin Team. Real name Mike, who oversees all moderation and admin of the forums. In effect he supervises us volunteer moderators.

I quite agree with the rest of what you say. The www and forums are a wonderful way of sharing ideas and getting questions discussed. However the anonymity of the web is also its Achilles heel. Trolls and keyboard warriors and mischief makers are plentiful. Sometimes it’s also difficult to tell the completely deluded fantasists from the imaginative and groundbreaking innovators. However you have to judge people on what they say and if little bits of their accounts don’t hold together very well, it’s no wonder their grandiose claims are questioned.

I don't hang around Comox much these days .I'm on Cortes Island at the moment ( a place my critics work all year ,and fly half way around the world, to spend 3 weeks in) heading for Quadra Island soon.

My posts are based on over 40 years of building, cruising full time in, crossing oceans in, maintaining and living aboard steel boats, which gives me far more credibility than those with none of the above experience, who claim that, that which has worked well for over 4 decades 'Wont work ",or those who claim that a fire can burn without oxygen, or that the way to fight a boat fire is to cut off the oxygen, then climb inside a sealed boat ,with the products of combustion of foam, plastic, etc, and fight the fire from within!
Someone has claimed that, doing that which as worked every time I have seen it done, warrants" no respect" but doing that which has failed every time I have seen it tried, is "The respectable way" of doing it.
Who needs "respect" from someone like that?
