The end of the tubing has an extension bar in it that would be ruined if welding involved.
I could not get vice grips in and my cobalt drill bits were not making inroads in the screw so I bought a new grinding disc which just had enough diamater to square off the top and I then pummelled it with a lump hammer and center punch - it finally came out.
What a horrible job!
