Hello,

We were returning from Poole to Cowes when received a databurst asking to go to Ch 80, and heard a French chap giving the reported position of something and then advising his current course and speed - 170kts. Anyone know what all this was about?

hi new chap. i dunno. This sounds a bit implausible - was it possibly a course of 170? Otherwise, i was in yarmouth trundling up towards cowes too in a powerboat and might have seen him temporairly in the unlikely event he skimmed thru the solent for three or four minutes end to end....

Thanks for the replies. It was definitely 170 kts - we all questioned it at the time and thought it might have been a French search and rescue plane looking for something. I just wondered if anyone else had received the alarm and listened to the transmission, and knew what was going on.

We were mid channel and had this DSC alert. CH 80 is used by Joburg Traffic Control who cover the Casquets TSS, they were talking about a deep draught vessel & asking people to keep clear, they gave it's course and speed but I didn't note it and certainly didn't hear 170kts!

The marines and SBS (hanging out with flippers) were out of Hamworthy over the last few days playing with their choppers, so might have been one of the training exercises , as the choppers came in empty the SBS must have jumped out !

Not me! Not due to be unloaded until 29th June.

Anyway we'll try and leave the slow speed testing until much later in the summer.
