Spiders...

Came home after a day's sailing on the Swale/Medway and found lots of insect bites in my arms and legs. Over the next few days developed horrible itchy blistery rash over same areas. Two weeks later same thing happened. This time noticed lots of little red spiders on the boat. Two weeks later - you guessed it, same again. This time identified source of spiders - floating in on the breeze on their gossamer. The rigging was festooned with them. Mate saw them too so either both hallucinating or it's true. The bites took four weeks to heal and the last time I had them on the face, neck and hands too. Good way to get space in crowded places and fun to offer handshake and watch people recoil, but made me quite ill. Anyone else ever experienced this? Could they have come from containers at Thames Port?

As a kid I remember little red spiders used to live on the brick walls on our estate, but never remember being bit after sitting on the walls.

They were really tiny though, don't know if they were the same as what you describe.

If they have been imported, perhaps you should inform the relevant authority whoever that may be.

Best check it out on this site as red spider mites come in harmless and harmful types. Some infections can be painful and require medical treatment. Sorry can't do links! http://www.kendall-bioresearch.co.uk/mite.htm#redspider.
