Unless you are fixed on the same set up, why not source another odometer?
I pulled a 2GM20 with all the bits. Quite a bit older, by the look, than your one. But just included the panel when selling on the bits for not a lot.

You would need some expertise in circuits. The problem seems to be that they are digital.

Judging by the maker community I think it's become somewhat more accessible than it was, say, thirty years ago... times change, relative difficulties of things change. They just haven't kept up.

Yes, I know that lots of makers do PCB design, but probably not many readers of PBO. I think that the biggest enablers in the last decade for DIY PCB's are 1) the software to do the designs becoming free and 2) the ridiculous cheap price of getting boards made in China. My design in this thread cost £8.50 for 10 boards, delivered as well.
