Most of us get it and despite tryng Mailwasher, Spamcatcher and one other, it still got through and wasted time. So I removed ALL references of my email address from my website and guess what? NOT ONE SPAM SINCE THEN. WHOOOOPIE.

Hope this helps you in your fight against spam.

Watch it Stingo - Kim H will get you!

Stingo,

You're in grave danger of having your thread locked down by Kim Hollamby, Protector of Free Speech and Good Manners.

As your post is "non-boatie" Kim will rigourously apply his self annointed power (as he does fairly to ALL non boatie posts) and lock this one, possibly he's considering deleting your other posts too?

Tut tut.

Well afore it gets locked...

If you want to have your email on your site, but avoid spam, make an image of the text... only human readable. Spammers are not human.

You can see what I mean on my site, contact page

Re: Excellent idea!

Maybe non boaty (why the hang up about this - the motorcycle web sites I use all have extensive non bike bits including bits for nerds?) but how do you get rid of semi porn spam on hotmail addresses? And no - I havent been looking at those sort of sites.

It all originates in the US. The hotmail spam filters are useless, as often binning the stuff you want as the offers for beast enhancement!

Any solutions welcome since its messy to change e mail addy after you've used one for years.

Pugwash

Excellent suggestion. Have now added a "text only" contacts page to my website.

Thanks

Re: Excellent idea!

Check out www.fastmail.fm its a bit more tech than Hotmail but about a million times better.... and no advertising. They also have excellent spam filters and you can set it up to collect your hotmail. Then you can set it up to use Outlook Express so you can write off-line then send if your on a dial up.

One of the other things you can do is use anything@youradress.fastmail.fm this means that with judicious use of the "anything" part you can track who is giving/selling your email adress - I caught my local online supermarket like that.

hotmail tips

most important one is on the sign-up form to uncheck the box for 'entry in the hotmail directory'. i didn't do it first time and had to close down the account because of the spam.

tip 2 is to make your name fairly long so the automatic address generators are unlikely to produce it, e.g. jones123 is sure to get hits but igotafunnylongname isn't going to be generated too often.

Re
Garbage in the email adress

eeerrm well it used to be but now since everyone uses the same 6 words ro obspu..obsdufi..obsfuf.... disguise their email the robots just strip it out!

Anyway this is a boaty subject, most cruisers use email and lots maintain websites, and would like for people to be able to stay in contact without being bombarded with junk.

Paul........ (not, I might point out Pugwash, thank you!)

Re: Excellent idea!

Those were examples, you can use other words that the robots don't strip. Doesn't take much intelligence to work that one out. random letters work well.

Don't understand about being a boaty thread......the thread title specifically says 'non boatie'. Lots of cruisers may well use email and have websites, but so do many of the rest of us. I can't see the differentiation. We all hate spam, and this is one of a multitude of ways that you can decrease the risk of receiving spam. Many people don't know about it, so what harm is there in posting it as one of several measures.

Personally I'm not sure why Stingo has stopped recieving spam suddenly, once you're on the mail lists, they tend to propagate, and just removing your address from a site isn't going to remove you from existing mail lists.

As to your comment about Pugwash, I don't get it at all?

You are absolutely right.. but all I have seen are nospam, garbage, remove or similar. ...I was just trying to help!

I was passing comment about the thread possibly being closed because it was "non boaty"... you are right everyone hates it, and I completely agree its relevant to everyone.

I have no idea how come they suddenly stopped for Stingo either, lucky sod! Maybe he bought one of those anti spam pieces of software that I keep getting spam about!! (there is a certain irony to that!)

RE As to your comment about Pugwash, I don't get it at all?

Because after I posted about text images Stingo replied...

"Pugwash
Excellent suggestion"

... and I'm Polarity!
