I wonder if anyone can recommend a UK domain and email provider ? Mine is currently Plusnet and I understand they are soon looking to get out of the market . I need to move before the cruising season starts as I don't want to be faffing around doing it on the boat!!

I use gmail.com. suggest you quickly set up @plusnet to forward all received emails to your new gmail address until they disappear.

I've just skimmed the Plusnet forum re email service withdrawal and I'm not convinced they're closing it down; only a rumour.

But if they do, and you only have a username.plus.com email address, there won't be much you can do. But if you also have your own domain name, just transfer it to another provider - I chose eUKHost.

When I left Plusnet, they let me keep my plus.com email address, just forwarding everything to my new email, free of charge. But you must tell them before closing the account!

I use gmail.com for both the boat and personally email addresses after the Institute for Engineer and Technology withdrew their 'email for life' when their lawyers got in a tizz about continuing to offering an iet.org address to its members!

If you want one of the most secure Email systems available : Protonmail

Designed to send sensitive data between 'clients', even Proton themselves cannot read the mails as it has double encryption ciphers ... unique to sender and receiver.

Hotmail : if any contact is made in my business with a Hotmail account - it is usual for that user to be asked by many in my 'world' to use Gmail or another 'free' system.
Similarly for Skype .....

Reason being is that the data mining that occurs on those two is legendary ..... well it is Microsoft !

Hotmail technically does not really exist anymore...
It is just one of a number of domains that feed into Office365/Microsoft.
This is the same backbone that probably 90% of British business are using ( at least the ones I deal with implementing an ERP system) so probability as safe and secure as any mainstream system you are likely to get...

The main thing to consider is never host you email with your ISP. Because if you move ISP you loose your email addres.

So use Gmail (Google), Microsoft, or what ever you think is best that is SEPARATE from your ISP.

Just thinking about that ..... hosting and what you lose / keep is dependent on how you host. If you host using THEIR email suffix - I agree ... but if you host your DOMAIN - then that can be moved with minimal loss.

Most businesses I deal with are similar in setup to mine regardless of company size - register a Domain, that then includes the Website and email addresses as you opt for .... site all on a server provider. The ISP you choose will depend on location ...

Example : My Company communications and Web site are hosted by Hong Kong Server company. My usual ISP is a Latvian provider. But as I travel - I use the ISP via hotel / apartment etc. to access my contract server.

I did fall foul of losing valuable emails a few years back - when I had a UK setup .... a glitch occurred which ended up with my resetting password etc. It lost all my emails and the provider NDO could not do anything about it ... despite it was due to their server.
That convinced me to separate the two parts.

I have my own domain that forwards to outlook/Hotmail/Microsoft.

Microsoft Outlook.com/Hotmail etc work perfectly and it's free.
Nothing Microsoft if is truely free. As soon as you exceed their included amount of data, you'll automatically enter their pension plan as sponsor.

I think the largest included data is by mail.com (65GB) who run 100+ domains but are in the US.

True but only if you are saving to domain - which most people would not know how to do. I have GB's ... and have no online storage to domain ... I am set to local storage like majority of people.

Most email have a max data / file size and that cannot be exceeded no matter what email program you use. Reason being that whoever you send to has limits ...
