Noticed in our club management minutes..."A request has been received for use of a swinging mooring for a month – a commercial wind survey for Trafalgar Wharf."
May be worth asking Trafalgar who is doing their survey?

The Hobie in question doesn't look very professional and I doubt it's connected but it raises a good question, did anyone with QHM or the pro outfits see anything ?

I hate to say it but I think if it were me that Hobie would quietly vanish overnight, in such a way as not to bother anyone else...

Someone who would almost certainly seen who towed the Hobbie onto your buoy would be one of the two Water Taxis who run out of Gosport Boatyard (Bill and Julie?). They are out and about most of the day and would have seen a strange sight such as that being slowly towed onto your mooring?

Gosport Boatyard
can be initially contacted on 02392 586 216

As for who owns the platform, there are at least five different companies who would do this type of research/survey work:

Downs & Harbours - http://www.cleanwaterpartnership.co.uk/here.html

EA - http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/research/planning/34383.aspx

Southampton University - http://www.southampton.ac.uk/oes

Cefas - http://www.cefas.defra.gov.uk/our-s...food-safety/shellfisheries-water-quality.aspx

UKD - http://www.ukdredging.co.uk/

Out of interest UKD are dredging currently in Portsmouth Harbour with UKD BLUEFIN and UKD SEALION and they have to monitor the amount of silt that they might disturb and this just might belong to them?

Do wind generators have serial numbers? It looks fairly new. Perhaps Ampair can tell you who they supplied it to?

I think the best thing to do is as already mentioned take it somewhere safe and tie it up or better still use its anchor. You have done all you can. You will be seen as acting reasonably.

The problem I have with moving it is, I have been reliably informed, that I become liable for any damage to the blasted thing!
BTW it has no luxuries like an anchor!

I can't imagine the OP would have gone elsewhere. Surely you'd put your boat on the mooring and hang the interloper off the back like a dinghy until you decided what to do with it.

Pete

I had to pick up someone else's mooring and then find out who it belonged to so I could contact them. I had visions of the mooring owner turning up and wanting to use their mooring. They could have been not so considerate and done what I should have done.....cast the offending vessel adrift!

I did consider hanging the offending vessel of my stern but was worried it might damage the boats around me. Can you imagine claims to repair my 3 neighbours boats AND one from the people that caused the problem in the first place!

They've not really done much harm you know - this thread has got too hot under the collar imho. It's probably just some undergraduate experiment, and for all we know they did ask permission and were told 'oh it'll be ok there for a few weeks...'). In fact I bet the OP would have said 'that's ok, go ahead' if asked - it's the lack of a polite note on the cat which is the point. But I bet the people who put the thing there are not muggers or druggies or benefit cheats, so their crime is a pretty minor one.

Why not either wait for the new term in which case they'll be back, or maybe send a polite and friendly email to someone who might know or make a phone call to find out, for instance a local academic like http://www.port.ac.uk/departments/academic/biology/staff/title,1016,en.html

I doubt he'd have said "that's ok", since he needs the mooring to keep his boat on.

But yes, my assumption was that it is some kind of student experiment (seems a bit elaborate for undergrad, though, maybe PhD) whose owners are not sailors and didn't understand how moorings are used. Probably looked at the area in the middle of winter when they started the project, and said "great, we can just tie it to one of those floating things out there, they don't seem to be doing anything".

However, in the sailing world everyone agrees that it's unacceptable to borrow a mooring without being present to move the boat rapidly if the owner returns. This is violating that understanding on a grand scale, hence the reaction.

All very well but where does the OP put his boat in the meantime and how does he cover the extra costs. Whilst I agree some comments are OTT it is still the case that he is not being allowed to use a facility he has paid for, and needs.
