Has anyone any experience of these? It's for a 27ft boat, so I don't want much heat output - small size is more important, to avoid encroaching on saloon space. Are there any other solid fuel small bulkhead mounted options?

Hi Nick!
I have a Bengco fitted to my 24ft Ben for the last five years and I am very happy with it. As my cabin is quite small the stove fits in a slot where the ice box lives in summer. It is important to provide heat restistant material around the stove... my cabin been wood lined I used a sheel of aluminum on three sides of the stove and this reflects the heat outwards very well. The stove is easy to light, as long as you follow the instructions provided and gives a controlable heat. I navigate all year around here on lake Geneva and it is quite often zero degrees outside whilst being anywhere between 20/30 or more degrees below decks. A dry heat so you never get any condensation. I use charcoal, (a bit dirty this) briquettes (much cleaner) turf and drift wood from the beach. It is important to empty the ash box - at least every 12 hours or the fire will go out. Also important to clean the chimney - I have a 3ft long bit which I attach to an electric drill to give it a rub about once a month...depending on use. The only drawback I have found is that the cabin lining, furniture, cushions can, over time, get a bit dirty but this is a small price for having a cosy, dry cabin throughout the winter. If you need further info pls pm me!
Yours warmly
Pelican

I have one in a 32 ft yacht. It heats the cabin really well. I agree with all the previous post points. I did have an annoying rattle when unlit at anchor caused by the internal pressing swaying bacwards and forwards into the outer casing. After some experimentation discovered that a clothes peg grasping both skins through the spyhole did the trick. Remove when filled for operation or the clothes peg will catch fire! Ever heard of a grandmother trying to tell someone-----
