Never having having peronally known any scrubbers (I wish) could anybody give me some tips on what scrubbing berths are available in the Solent & how you use them with a fin keeler?
There are some at Itchenor (not technically the Solent of course but close enough). Nice spot, and you can savour the delights of the Ship Inn once your work is done and you're waiting to re-float.
You will find very reasonably priced scrubbing grids at both Hardway Marine and the Hardway Sailing Club in Gosport. Pressure washers can be hired from both.
Maybe not quite the Solent. But Chichester Harbour. By the Harbour Masters office (phone and book) Two sets of posts, with ladders and runner water.
Get there for high tide (springs if your deep fin) Lay along side with fenders in place (horizontal in pairs) Tie off your main halyard to the rope provided, Lay some weight to the posts side, so when it settles it leans towards the posts a few degrees. Then wait for the tide to fall checking your fenders as you go down. And blow up your dinghy. (your need that to get back from the pub once the tide returns)
Bottom firm, theres a ladder on one of the posts to get down and a water tap to use. You can hire a power hose for the boatyard.
If your scrubbing off, remember if youve got wetsuit or can stand the cold water you can scrub off while the tides going out (once its below suitable level) You can antifoul easily within the tide. But changing skin fittings can be dangerous, if it not watertight or fitted properly. (even boatyards get these wrong, lucky my boat was in a sling so they could hoist it out, to refit it)
If you are near Lymington, they have two berths for scrubbing at the Town Quay and also piles near the RLymYC. These are both up the river and protected against swell. Contact HM:01590 672014.
