It's interesting that it's the heavier boats in semi-displacement mode going quite slowly (12 kts ish) that are generating the largest wakes.
The only real time I had a real problem with wakes in the Solent was when I went across the stern of a tug, to find a 2metre hole in the water.

The Seacats leave a nasty, steep almost square wake; funnily enough I've always found the most difficult to handle high speed jobs, the hovercraft, are way above the others, in another league for courtesy and professionalism.

Another similarity to the P.N.W.
The more condsiderate ones give us a slow bell when passing close by.
It can be quite funny listening to them tell each other off for his wake.
For me its the noise I find more irritating.

That is one reason I do not support the sham of red diesel and 40/60 usage. Boat fuel should be priced the same as car fuel, which might gradually influence things

If you were to sail here yourself, you might have a different view.
For starters, it's big.
There are no midges.
But there are plenty of quiet spots.
Just off Cowes or the entrance to the Hamble are infamous for being like the M25, but when's the last time you went for a picnic on the M25.
And anyway, why should the wind be free?
How about generating some more tax revenue from sailing yacht owners: say, £20 per sq m of sail area per year.
Sounds reasonable to me.
