Dylan,

I've moored in Chichester harbour for more than twelve years and can honestly say in all that time you very rarely see anyone speeding, not just out of consideration but the chance of a hefty fine. You will always get knobs but that's just life. I'm sure there is an M25 equivalent of you who films everyone he believes isn't following the highway code to the letter of the law.
There must be better things to do with that time...

I've just moved away from Chichester Harbour, it's not the mobos who are a pain it's the racing boats!

People fart, mobo's make wash. Sometimes you can control it, other times you just have to let it happen and hope no one is around to witness it.

If powerboat owners are so incompetent that they can't always control what they do, this would seem to confirm Dylan's contention that they are more of a nuisance than should be the case. It is only necessary to see a professional skipper driving one of these things to appreciate that it is perfectly possible to manoeuvre them slowly. As Dylan says, many of these owners just don't care.

Why would you want to maneuver a motorboat slowly in the middle of the Solent? And if you want to see incompetents just trundle off to Chichester harbour and view ther sailing clubs setting up their starting lines across the main channels.

I was responding to the supposition that these boats can't be manoeuvred slowly, which is not true. Sailing club members, by definition, are not committed users of powered craft, but generally operate RIBs with whatever training is necessary. Actually, I have watched people being given powerboat training in RIBs in a number of places and enjoyed seeing the trainees being made to operate these craft very slowly in and out of berths, knowing that this is a necessary skill.

The fact that some sailing clubs get in other people's way occasionally is not an answer to Dylan's evidence of thoughtless and alarming behaviour.

I think you should be pointing that out to Dylan not me as that's where you got your supposition from. I know it's not true. believe it or not we don't moor our boats at 20 knots. The mind boggles.

Dylan,

If I had such a sad life as you seem to have I'm sure I could sit in the harbour with my trusty vidoe camera at the ready to capture a sailor doing something I didn't agree with but fortunately for me I have better things to do. Get over it, it's making you a bitter person.

the occasional arrogant inconsiderate mobo driver is just one part of solent sailing

I think what you are saying is that you do not want me to film them

if I do then you will accuse me of being a bitter saddo

I am sorry if it upsets you that I point my camera at them (I am sure that you would never behave in such a way) but I point it at lots of other things

If I am filming something and a mobo comes past making a lot of noise and a lot of wash then I have two choices

i can turn the camera off and wait until the noise and the wake has gone - or turn it on the mobo as it goes past

I spend most of my time filming the nice things - but making a video series about the coast of britain and coming to the solent and not filming any badly behaved mobos would be to create a fanatsy

Dylan,

With all that filming did you manage to capture a sail boat doing something you didn't agree with or was it you just happened to have your camera switched on when mobo's did it?

Don't suppose you had your camera on when these rules were broken? Or chose just not to film it because it didn't bother you. Your bias spoils your reporting

"Race Officers should avoid setting any course where:

a. The starting line crosses a main fairway, especially at times of peak harbour traffic, but in any event shall always ensure that any start or finish line does not prevent non-racing traffic being able to pass safely

b. competitors will obstruct a main fairway channel during the pre-start sequence"

Those rules do seem to be conveniently forgetten every weekend Kev. :)

watch the skiff film

tell me if they are being inconsiderate

some might say that they are

in a centaur I have no chance of getting out of their way regardless of which tack I am on

so they sail arond me

of course - the sail boats are silent and make no wash

if I am down below and a skiff or moth comes past at 20 knots I would not even know

if a mobo does the samre thing then I will certainly know

so it is not the act of breaking the local rules it is the impact that your action has on others

it is the lack of consideration

of course perhaps they are not aware of the impact they have

I am not sure which is worse - ignorance or arrogance

I do admire you for defending them though - although why you feel it necessary to attack me for pointing a camera at something escapes me

I'm not defending anyone and have ever said it's their right and I haven't attacked you. You have a mission to selectively film mobo's, something with which you have an issue.

I would agree that speeding in Chichester Harbour is naughty, but not something I see every day. It does happen, though, and there have been a couple of £2500 fines.

But ... the entrance to Cowes ... really?
In a kayak, if the 4kt cross-current didn't get you, one out of the Red Jet, the Red Funnel, Ventura or the Hanne Knutsen probably would.
A Broom 425 creating some wake is generally not the most pressing issue.

Is this thing switched on?

I have NEVER come across a sailor who has issues with mobo's, we have the banter of course but they have all had the attitude of horses for courses, except Dylan. The more he posts the more I see him as a nasty piece of work. He has an agenda and slyly slips it into his otherwise interesting video's. Would be interested to know what the cause of his hatred was.

I bet all his life he secretly wanted a mobo but for whatever reason hasn't and subconsciously turned his longing into hatred. If I can't have you I'll hate you and try and make everyone else hate you too. :D

One day I will film what happens when a 50ft Flybridge passes a smaller 28ft sports cruiser at speed.
It's quite dramatic, the world goes sideways for a few seconds.
"Hold on everybody", slow down a bit, then 45' into the wake, and wheeee.

I could get annoyed instead, but I prefer my time on the water to be lacking in M25 syndrome.
