"nasty piece of work"

blimey I would hate to be attacked

fear that you are not really aware of the impact of either your wake or your language

empathy is not a strong card then

D

Why would I empathise with you? If you had an emotional loss then as a stranger I would empathise as such but I'm questioning your reasons for videoing mobo's? Does that require empathy or should I feel empathy for you because you don't have a mobo?

This is silly. Dylan, i'm not on the boat for the next couple of weekends but if you're still around the solent bank holiday weekend at the end of the month I would love for you to come for a ride and see the dark side. You won't be ostracised, I promise. Many a sailor has been aboard and continued sailing afterwards.

Actually, i'm probably around Chichester next thurs and Friday if you are interested.

In amongst all this, has anybody actually commented on the actions of the boats?

Not polite & considerate behavior, IMNSHO.

I've read almost seventy posts in this thread...I thought it was going to be about electric propulsion?

Oh! Solent motorboats. I thought it was Silent motorboats.

Yes, I agree. Who in their right mind would but a start line across a busy, restricted channel. beggars believe doesn't it.

Entirely agree. But what about the boats in Dylan's video. Reasonable behavior, or not?

The one at the beginning was a bit close but given the type of boat it was I'd put a pound to a penny it's an ex sailor.

The last boat looked close until Dylan panned out and as it shows He was coming off the plane to enter what looked like Cowes so the wash was more than if he had steamed on by so was just the nature of the beast. Not sure what care Dylan was showing, concentrating on his video cam rather than the entrance to one of the busiest stretches of water and the center of the worlds yachting community. A pretty busy place to be bobbing around making a video don't you think? ;)

The worst rock'n'roll I've had in Chi was on a mooring at itchenor when an inshore fishing boat came past with the throttle nailed to the bulkhead. Right in front of the HM office too. Probably the HM's brother in law.

I anchored over Saturday night at the anchorage just past itchenor and was almost thrown out of bed by an early morning fishing boat going out.

Jill was on the steering stick

if you have a problem with women at the helm then feel free to air them here

I am sure they will be received in the spirit with which they are offered

I have yet to see him go at the same speed & make the same wake as some motor boats so until he does I'd say he was considerate

a large leisure motor vessel came past me in Portsmouth harbour. He passed about 10 metres away and we had to put up with his wash

I threw my arms up in exasperation and he made the well known obscene gesture with his hand.

It was quite funny but I did wonder about his state of mind ....

I have NEVER come across a sailor who has issues with mobo's...

You haven't lived!

I sail out of the Solent (because it is the closest sea to where I live), which means that some of the time I sail in the Solent. Not all mobos are inconsiderate, but a great many are either just that or wontonly ignorant of the on-board effect of their wash on sailing vessels and small craft generally. Two areas where I consistently have problems with mobo wash is outside the entrance to the Hamble and to Chichester Harbour. Even if crewed (and I'm often single-handed), I clip on solely to flake the mains'l down in these areas - because this is where mobos tend to really open up and sudden wash always means radical rolling, a flinging boom and the possibility of sudden death.

I'm not anti-mobo - my 8' tender with its 2.5HP outboard is effectively a mobo and can cause unnecessary wash close to moorings - I just appreciate that it is the psychological makeup of many big boat moboists that they lack a certain sensitivity to other users of the water...

:)
