so whats WRONG with Bavarias then?

Re: ze \"3 bavs\" fender

The newer Bavs do have a lighter wood interior but maybe this is the 'orange' hue referred to earlier. It is a good move to chuck out the dingy old mahogany finish and go for something brighter. Just to really appear sane and objective, I quite like the Etap interiors, which have, for a long time, tried to do something creative.

I agree that there should be space for more imagination in design of interiors. Not for everyone I know, but I quite like the Starck designed bene S series, mainly because at least they were trying something different. Personally, I don't understand why nearly all wood isn't chucked out of interiors and replaced with modern vinyl finishes (doesn't have to be brilliant Dulux white) which look sharp and are infinitely more hardwearing.

As for Bav moving upmarket, I think they will. I've not inspected the new deck saloon range. I'm sure they don't represent a move upmarket per se, but are maybe a clue as to what might be underway.

I think the resistance to doing anything interesting down below in premium priced boats has a lot to do with the very conservative tastes of many of their buyers - a bit like putting a digital clock in a Bentley. But I think they are missing the point that such a market is ageing and younger tastes will demand a less 'club lounge' look.

hm, was it really a bright idea to share a buoy in the first place in a northerly in Alderney? I think not. I wouldn't have let you raft in the first place if I was on the buoy. Strange to blame the other boat for pushing you instead of you for being there and/or the crew for missing footing - and how hard can a boat be pushed anyway - it's not like pushing a skateboard is it?

Whilst having every sympathy with Guapa for what happened and which indeed could easily have been much worse I have to say TCM has a valid point.

Alderney in a northerly and especially north easterly is horrendous, completely exposed to wind and sea and it never ceases to amaze me that people will still go there knowingly in that wind direction. That said the accepted rule in Alderney is that rafting is not done unless the conditions allow it and in the event of a change in conditions the first arrival may ask the later arrival to move.

Personally I would not have considered going alongside another boat in the first instance, but then I've been going there for years so benefit of the doubt. Much better would be to avoid Alderney altogether or anchor clear of the moorings. We normally anchor there anyway.

Like TCM had I been on the buoy I too would have refused permission to come alongside. This is not being unfriendly or unkind but it is common sense in the interest of safety and which was clearly recognised eventually as Guapa decided to move.

Re: ze \"3 bavs\" fender and the Bavaria Ghia S

Well, bentleywise, the dgital clocks are here and the average age of bentley owner plummeting.

Difficult design issue on a boat is frexample that slightly wild flailing of the frying pan whilst underway should not result in too-serious damage. Hence solid wood is sort-of better as the eye is more forgiving of dented real wood than it is to (say) dented sheet aluminum or a mirror with a chip in it.

So what's this "vinyl" to which you refer? Like pencil case material strecthed about? Or like vinyl matt paint? Or formica?

Re: ze \"3 bavs\" fender and the Bavaria Ghia S

Oh I don't know - plastics are not really my thing! On the flying saucepan issue, homes seem to have cracked it without relying on wood in the kitchen surfaces/walls. Admitedly most kitchens tend to be fairly stable places but on pancake day maybe similarish.
Most cars seem to use high quality plastics which seem to put up with a huge amount of 'misuse'. I think maybe it's as much about colours as materials. Many Dehlers have a lightish grey interior without excessive shiny wood. Not for everyone I know, but at least different and it seems to be practical.

Note to self: That's at least three nice things said about other marques. I must learn to take a more entrenched position lest I appear weak and indecisive.

Re: ze \"3 bavs\" fender and the Bavaria Ghia S

Sadly (or not, on your viewpoint) the cost of plastic tooling is prohibitive on real low volume production.
The lowest common denominator is vacuum formed ABS with a texture pattern on the surface. Unfortunately, this means that you are limited with shapes and on deep draw areas, you lose the evenness of the surface texture. If you move ot the next higher technolgy, it starts getting very expensive, but pretty to look at.
The we can add in mould trim foils or veneers, special photographic areas in the moulding, the list goes on.

My experience says though that it will be a sales flop.
I also loved the Benny First S series with the light airy colourful interiors, but if they were that popular, why aren't all boats like it 15 years down the line?

Re: ze \"3 bavs\" fender and the Bavaria Ghia S

Must admit i thought the dark interior Starke ones were not my taste (diplomatic heh!) and did seem like Ben were clearing an overstock of windows/hatches

Not a lot and have a look at the pre 1996 ones the joinery is utterly fabulous their weight/displacement is as high as a Ben or Jen and they go for much the same money. The newer ones are good but make sure your pet squirrel can swim well to pick the nuts up and don't for Gawds sake let the keel hit the bottom; it’ll stay there while the boat moves on - for a bit anyway until the boat rejoins it.
Cheers,
Kristoria
