I am currently casting around for boat insurance and with out the benefits of "No Claims Discount", you can imagine that the sums quoted are a little hefty. I am offered "third party" at around £300 and "comprehensive" at around £400. The excess range from £150 to £250 respectively.
I guess the question that I'd like to pose is, if you knew then what you know now, what degree of insurance cover would you go for as a novice and does anyone have the details of a competitive insurance company?

Exactly the same decision making process as a novice car driver. What is the boat worth to replace? If the boat is worth 10's or 100's thousands then third party is probably not a good option

GJW have always been pretty good, but the same as car insurance, any insurance company is going to be better or less suited to than another person depending on where you keep the boat, what you do with it, experience etc. Only way to get a good quote is to phone around.

look in the back of MBM and MBY - all the main companies advertise there. Ring them all! I've just done that and the quotes varied greatly. Get full comp insurance, although boat claims are low, all sorts of things could happen to you boat - run aground, hit submerged objects , fire, collision with buoys etc. I'd been with one compay for over 10 years but moved as I got a more competitive quote - this was with Navigator and General. But each premium is looked at individually. So I repeat, just ring round them all and don't consider 3rd party only.

Not my favourite subject!!! Marine insurance is IMHO no different to any other insurance very quick to take your'e money, definately not interested from there on in. What ever company you choose, I would advise go direct ,and not through any 3rd party(broker etc) And make sure you get some kind of loss of use cover, And LEGAL protection, It may IF you are lucky speed things along, because if you can claim for loss of use, they may actually get their fingers out and do somethimg about settling claims a bit quicker than a snails pace!!!!
ALL IMHO of course!!!
good luck

Re: Just a quick comment

3rd party is ok if you have a very inexpensive boat, when all you should be worried about is some bugger sueing you when you run into the side of a 60ft mega yacht and it sinks blocking the only deep water channel from a commercial harbour to the sea.Managed OK with this for years with many of my first speedboats.
However if your pride and joy is worth lots of dosh, fully comp is way to go.As for excess, would suggest reduce premium by taking advantage of max excess available.
If you have minor bump, tough. Damage mainly to pride so sort it yourself .
Will be loads quicker and less people will be pointing and smirking at damage/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif
When you have the big one,ie.you can just see top of mast at low water, you will not be bleating about coughing up a few hundred quid excess.
This year have gone with craft insure.Same company as previous year but now no broker involved.Saved nearly 160.00 pounds on 370 broker quote.
Think I will go into boat ins, with commisions like that.

Boat Insurance

could not agree...

Navigator and General every time.

Willow tree hit our Broom 38 and within a matter of days it was sorted and agreed.

Maybe not the cheapest but service is fabulous. You pay for what you get.

If you know you are not going to make a claim, go for the cheapest.

remember the summers are short enough and a claim not settled will reduce it further.
