Hi, I hve a turbo diesel engine & when I rev it up out of gear it runs fine, but when I'm under way there is a lot of black smoke in the exhaust, but when I rev the engine up to full out of gear the exhaust is clear of black smoke.

couls anyone please advise me on this, Thanks.

Nothing in your profile so not a clue about engine or boat etc.
Black smoke is excess fuel being burnt, so could be blocked air filter, overloaded either prop or weed etc. Pump or injector issues etc.
Give us a clue is it reaching peak revs & speed with lots of smoke or not? What have you done already? Does it make any untoward noises, does it use oil?

Could be several reasons. Assuming this has only just started happening, check these for a start.

Air filter blocked?
Is hull covered in weed and barnicles?
Is turbo working?
Is prop damaged?

After that, you're in the realms of
Incorrect prop pitch/size
faulty injectors or pump (try using injector clean)

A few more details of boat / engine combo might help.

Compressor, what in the UK is referred to as a Supercharger, a blower driven mechanically (by belt, chain, or shaft) from the engine to force more air into the engine. By "overfilling" the cylinders you get an equivalent of a bigger engine in a smaller lighter package.
You've probably seen Kompressor on the back of Mercs they have superchargers, rather than Turbo's.
Turbochargers like the Perkins have are a blower driven by exhaust gases eg. without mechanical link.
Downside is that the superchargers when they fail would probably be more expensive to fix.
Not sure think the KAMD maybe Turbo'd and Supercharged, I know V^%v* are now doing that with the bigger boat motors.

"blower driven by exhaust gases eg. without mechanical link" as per Perkins

sound a lot more reliable to me Jim, less moving parts maybe just a hunch

They are turbo&s/charger. S/charger runs from just above idle to 1500rpm to get you out of the hole, then they disengage (elctro mechanical clutch, like an air con comp) turbo then carries on the good work. EDC engines have the s/chargers running from cold on idle, for fast warm up. Once warm, they cut in as throttles are opened till 1500rpm as said earlier.

Yeah, but turbos have a weedy whine and blowers have that noise that put the wind up people.

Anyway I'm drifting the thread. So why does this engine smoke, well its a diesel init!

Sorry proper superchargers come attached to Rolls Royce Merlins etc.
As regards this diesel, we've established it's been totally rebuilt , so does the smoke occur all the time, when at speed, does it pull right to peak revs at full speed?

I dunno. He seems a bit shy about telling us.

RR Merlins, Mmm not bad at all. Bit of a monster at 27ltr though.
What about the Griffin then, developed from the Merlin into 33ltr brute.

Still love a *full on* KB though .

In the 70's I worked at the airport, and our restroom was on the apron edge. One day an RAF Shakleton was in the island (Jersey)- they parked outside facing our rest-room and did a full rev burn-out on all 4 engines - THAT is noise!
Another time a Vulcan came low along the runway and then turned up right over our heads and went vertically upwards - we were drilled into the ground.

How the hell have we gone from turbo diesels, to fighter jets in so few posts??

Think the Vulcan was one of the loudest jets ever. Anyone confirm that?

I've always reckoned it was the English Electric Lightning, although that had 2 admittedly aftererburned against the Vulcans 4. Lightning was fatest climbing jet for a very long time, I was 100 yards from one at Farnborough who went into vertical climb straight after takeoff. I couldn't hear a thing for day!

For me, English Electric Lightening barrelling along Turnberry's runway at 100-150 ft and going ballistic at the end of the runway fastest climbing jet on the planet until the Phantom F4. 33,000 ft/min if I remember correctly. Landing it was a barely controlled crash.
