Silence in the Wash

It had to happen ,when and where were not my choice but it had to go some time.
Yesterday took a run across from Fosdyke to Hunstanton ,a perfect day just right .
On the inbound run back up the river to the mooring the engine rev's lifted .
I told Fred to leave the throttle alone he has a habit of nudging the revs up to get there faster ( I know every time he touches it even if I'm snoozing ).
Next thing a slight noise followed by an abrupt engine stop ,ok so first thing that springs to mind, some thing around prop. I checked under the gearbox cover , oh I say cook an egg on that the heat told me all I needed to know .
The out put gear ratio section was very very hot ,typical as we constantly monitor the gear box oil pressure gauge .
I at first tried to cool it down by pouring water over the area but this was taking ages so next I put the bilge pump over board to really give it a dousing , ten minuets and the temperature had come down ,bearing in mind the internal parts were transferring heat through to the casing .
Started the engine then put in reverse a slow gripping pressure which again cut the engine .
There was no point in taking it apart as at that time of night by torch light other problems would occur so the option was to tie up or anchor .

Next as is always the case, lost the steering !!!! unreal or what don't ask me I had just had the tug out last week to check over things and while doing that improved the rudder connection re the quadrant to stock. At that point I had checked over the cables to ensure free running and greased all the runners. So the emergency tiller came in to use.
The tide was on the lift which helped as, all be it slowly we were making the same rate around 3 to 4 knots ,so the task was to pole the tug off the bank to avoid getting stuck this we did for the last mile and a half . We must have looked like smugglers coming in in complete silence no lights showing .
First thing to go was a garden hoe ( sounds daft don't it !!) we had used it the other week while looking for the propeller that had been lost a few years ago .
Next my mobile phone went plop ( they never go splash ).
Finally the long wooden pole stuck just as I was giving my rendition of just one coneto , so now it was down to the final thing a garden rake !!!.
Always carry a garden rake HA HA .
Still got through the bridge then only because of expert guidance ( Fred ) made it past the other moorings right up to our one .
A very pleasant way to end the day got huge bits on top of my left poling arm spose its called muscle !!.
If it had happened out on the Wash then I would have taken things apart to get enough sorted to get back in but we had some luck with that.
So later today down to get things apart ,
It could be the out put shaft bearing properly over heated shattered and or welded its self to the shaft
It could be the gears have shed a few teeth causing the loose bits to jam .
I tend to go for the first that the bearing has failed.
I started the engine and checked through the oil filler hole that , the main gear box still operated ok ,then while engine stopped that forward and reverse were working which again is ok .
While checking through I did have a look at the stuffing box but no problem there also where the shaft goes through a water tight bulk head again no problem there ,I greased it before the run any way , when I say no problems there I mean no build up of heat indicating a problem .
I like to let a few drips of water come through the stern gland packing especially when on a run ,this way I know its not to tight or over heating.
The gear box has a modification , instead of the original silly toy town oil pump which had failed the hydraulic pump on the engine was connected up . This was done because the oil pumps on Parsons are a major fault causing seizers through oil pump failer.

So if you see a parsons gear box just sitting there taking up room let me know .

Oh Heck!! Never mind. I've got blokes up here that cut gears for fun. Of course you know that bearings are available off the shelf from most engineering stores. So thats not to much of a problem. Just need a new supply of gardening equipment now!!

No one can force me to come here-----------

Just got back after undoing the shaft coupling ( only took one and a half hours !!)
With the engine stop out and operating the starter motor it turns quite happily ,mmmmmm conclusion is the thrust bearing .AS once full loading is applied it tightens ,
So now have to make a small gantry or try to get engine hoist in situ to enable gearbox to be lifted and moved forwards . That means the exhaust job can be done as well while things are apart.

Enjoyed the story but glad it wasn\'t me

Enjoyed the story and you coped really well.

Sounds like you will be getting intimate with you're gearbox ! ( not colonic irrigation though I hope).

Let us know how you get on.

p.s. As I seem to be the only bloke not to get intimate with Eureka Johnsssson what's she like ?
