Rapidly downhill? I thought we were bumping along in the Mariana Trench already.

Maybe next, I'll go for comical typos in boat brokers' ads. Though doubtless that's been worn through to the balsa core, too.

If one looks at the Berthon brokerage listings on their website, the details tend to be comprehensive and factual, often with interesting and thoughtful insights. My experience of following them up has always met with knowledgeable and courteous attention.

In the magazine ads, there's one page to highlight, say, 20 boats. How to get attention and stand out from the numerous pages of similar pictures and descriptions of plastic money-pits? Berthon use a technique to hook interest which some don't like; some do.

Let me translate, à la Berthon headline:

Rambunctious verbiage is cannily caged for whacko, in-your-face, front-page like-it-or-lump-it impact! Detailing any dull actual information is Progrippingly performed by a relief crew, up to the gunwales with show-how and know-how, but actually they're a diametrically different, demi-decibel writers' sub-species, no-bull-thankia.

I never said a word against Berthon's adept specific content, very ably covering boats in close-up. It's only the foul front door I don't like.

That is probably because your acquaintance (or you) can't spell the word properly.

BTW fail to see how your little "pearl" has any relevance to the subject of this thread.

Cant you? I believe it was " should be strangled at Berthon." Surely there is a tenuous conection? Spelling was never my strong point either, thanks for pointing it out.

I like it.

Have to chime in here. I like their style and tone of voice. I find it amusing and do read their adverts in YM. Makes a change from the bland boring adverts of others.

Horses for courses.

At the end of the day the broker doesn't matter as much as the boats on their books. With the intarwebs, if one's searching for a particular boat, you'll probably find it.

The adverts just reinforce the brand; more PR really.

I hope they continue.

Yes, tenuous at best - the first pun was mildly amusing, the escalation of hyperbole irritating and suggestion of killing a 14 year old before she even got to that age rather distasteful!

Why choose a particular brokerage

We have our boat with Berthon's at the moment as we want to move up. I suppose the proof of the pudding will be in the eating. Why did we choose them well they generally deal with solid upper end cruising yachts. I prefer dealing with a broker that is not limited to one marque (Transworld,Oyster) as to their discriptive language does it really matter if they have the boat that your looking for, and offer a professional service which they do, what the hell. If you request from them a detailed description of a boat that catches your eye, that's what you get, without all the jargon. They also have an established network throughout Europe which some other smaller brokerage houses can't boast.

However I do find some of the comments in this thread offensive and sexist having dealt with Sue Grant in the past and found her to be very professional.

You might want to re direct her to this more positive thread....

I’ve always had a soft spot for the old Suzi Palmer-Tomk and there was a well filled example up the hammers at Lurching last Wogan. Fat packets, firm breeze, honey to the bee. Watched it get touched up the hat rack for a spaniel under nine grahams.
