A friend who I crew for has been informed by his maintenance man that Shotley Marina now want £50 per day contractor fee if he works on site, taking the p*** is putting it politely…the boat will be looking for a new berth once the current contract expires, I guess profits are down and they believe ripping people off will help, a bit shortsighted if you ask me.

SYH do not charge contractor fees, neither does Ipswich Beacon Marina. Woolverstone charge a small fee, as does Titchmarsh.

I have several customers with boats in Shotley, when they need my services they bring the boat to Ipswich. A short stay here costs about £5. over night is usually less than Shotleys contractor fee.

Shotley website says £36 per visit. I believe that in practice they don't or at least didn't charge for specialist contractors doing work that Shotley can't do themselves; one practice that they allegedly use is that specialist contractors have to be booked via Shotley, who deduct 15% from the contractor's charge to Shotley and then put the 15% back on to the charge to the boat owner.

I always used the contractors of my choice, not who I’m being told to use by the marina, then you get someone you know and trust, with the current cost of berthing and maintenance I’m glad I no longer own a boat, have spoken to a few people this year who are looking to reduce costs or give up boating.

As a Shotley berth holder I'm in two minds. Their prices have been going up without a parallel uplift in quality so far. Martin and Gary - two of their long term team (Martin ran the boatyard operations) have retired and they seem short handed. A couple of big jobs on massive boats have occupied them for a couple of years it seems and smaller "bread and butter" work has been leaking to contractors I suspect. I wonder if they've just woken up to this.
On the one hand - I want a capable, modern and busy boatyard at Shotley - skills and equipment right to hand. On the other hand, if they're going to be the most expensive location to get work done then I'll have to re-think and re-prioritise.
Think the simple answer is - keep them honest by getting more than one quote for every job.

It seems they haven't learned their lesson since they tried to charge me a percentage of the sale fee for using an external broker. They walked away the day before the court case paying me my expenses and interest at 9% on the several thousand pounds that I had been forced to pay them under duress.
Shysters just about describes the owners.

My experience is that the new yard manager is responsive and knowledgeable on the odd thing that I have had done. Gary is a big blow as he was very competent and very responsive.. Fingers crossed they will fill the gap.

You miss the point the charges that Shitely impose are nothing to do with the site managers and never have been. They like the berthing fees are decided by the owners.

Mark, the new yard manager, is very knowledgable, he has been in the industry for several years and was one of the directors at Neptune marina. Agree with you ref Gary, but Mark also knows his way around an engine.

If that's Marc (sp) from Neptune then he's a good bloke (& competent) - I believe he worked for Volspec at one point.

No I don't miss the point. I was commenting on the workmen not the charges.

It seems the Shotley are more interested in building apartments than the quality of the Marina.
As I understand it they have now introduced parking charges in the main public car park. Orignially the bus used to go down to the end to connect with the foot ferry, but now does not go beyond the pub.
Draw your own conclusions.
