Already tightened as a matter of routine

Presuming she'll be as large, or bigger, than some of the buggers we get in Harwich harbour, VTS would be preaching to the converted calling that out on the VHF. Crystal and I have to keep running away from the HSS Stena Discovery, which I think is following me about.

I checked, and you aren't making this up!

I thought Fred Olsen's ownership of the good ship VENUS was pretty outrageous, but this is better.

Actually, they are harmless

Big tankers poodle gently along at 14.5 knots, give or take a knot. They are fairly easy to spot - very easy when in ballast - and because they are so big they stay in the deeper parts of the sea. They are beamy, and have round bows. I don't recommend trying it, but I think that a small boat that found herself under a big tanker's bow would be shoved to one side by the bow wave.

I'm much more scared of fishing boats!

Every fishing boat, and especially the huge French ones, apparently is convinced the mother of all fish shoals lies directly beneath us....

Re: Already tightened as a matter of routine

Mirelle,

Was the venus a cruise ship in the 1970's? My dad used to be a travel agent and often tells a story of a trip he and my Mum had on a cruise liner called the Venus I understand that it had the nickname "the Vommiting Venus" because it had a reputation for having a somewhat uncomfortable motion.... Don't know if it is true or not!

There's been a Venus ferry operating between Newcastle and Bergen (Norway) for donkeys years. Originally it was operated by the Bergen Line, now it's the Color line. They also had 2 other ships - the Leda and the Jupiter back in the 60's.

Hmm.
Thats an old one for new barmaids at hotel bars.
They were phoned from reception and asked to shout out in the bar 'Has anyone seen Mike Hunt?'

Re: Actually, they are harmless

I heard of a tanker sighting a drfting abandoned chinese junk mid ocean somewhere. It was decided to ram it to remove a hazard to shipping.

On the third attempt after the bow wave washing it out of the way each time they gave up.

Re: Already tightened as a matter of routine

I remember the British army being trained at Voss. I'll never forget the sight of complete beginners being hurled down the slopes and shouted at! There were many injuries, but the survivors quickly became reasonably competent.

In due course I was imported to the UK by mum on board the Leda, my dad worked for the Bergen Line.

Re: Already tightened as a matter of routine

First time we went it was to Evjemoen, probably the wrong spelling, and one day this norwegian army conscript came up to us and send in the broadest liverpool accent- any of you guys from the pool?
Turned out he was born in Bergan, went to Liverpool as a kid but never changed his nationality. Got his call up papers and thought he would go for a laugh. He suffered for two years!!

A company I worked for had the convention of first initial and first four letters of the surname as an email address, except for one of the regional sales managers whose name was Ken Hunt!

...and I was in the Army with a Major R S Hole, poor chap. Some parents seem to lack worldly experience when naming their kids, don't you think?

There used to be a Moody 29 in Dartmouth called Don't Panic and I often used to imagine a VHF call from a frigate at that time called Sirius.
