Anyone got any views on this 24 foot river cruiser as a first boat? Single Nanni engine, lots of toys (even a bow thruster), heating etc etc and all for around the £30k mark. Money well spent, or better off spending half and the rest down the pub? I think it would be ideal to learn the ropes and take us up/dwon the Thames for a season until we get restless and want to go past Teddington.

A friend of mine has just sold one of these and replaced with next one up, 27 ft I think. He is quite particular so I don't think there can be much wrong with them.

Should'nt get bored with the river that quickly. If you are based below Windsor, try moving it further up. The beautiful part (fewer houses) starts above Maidenhead.

If you do think you will be coast bound inside a year, don't buy new. You wil lose at least the VAT c. £5k in the first year.

'Fraid I don't know the the specific boat, but I guess it's like everything else - what sort of use do you want it for? If my kids/family/friends are anything to go by if you plan to be on board for several days at a time with any others, I'd have thought space might be a bit tight on a 24'.
I agree with Miket though - you'll probably need longer than a season to get bored with the Thames (well to see it properly and meet all the characters, anyway).

My first step based on advice this forum gave to others, was to find the biggest boat I could afford . It's not the newest or shiniest bit of plastic on the river, but it's done everything I wanted and can still go coastal when I want. Although the flybridge limits what bridges you can clear, I can still get as far up as Oxford (just).

The next one up is the 30 foot 950, they've also started doing an aft cabin, similar in style to the Broom aft cabin boats.

We'll base her maybe Wargrave/Bray/Old Windsor, possibly up as high as Pangbourne.

I don't think we'd get bored of the Thames as such, rather I know I'd like to be doing some hops across the Channel once we've got the hang of things. So probably 2-3 years would be more appropriate.

My wife fell in love with a Princess DS 30 the other day for £30k, but I decided it needed too much work doing to it.

We've hired in the past a 27 footer and a 29 footer, both a sporty style river cruiser.

There aren't that many about (2nd hand) - what was your friends called?

Yeah - we checked out one at Penton Hook - Soggy Dollar was her name I think.
Nice enough boat with lots of space - I just didn't fancy rubbing down all the woodwork and re-staining/varnishing it and replacing a very rusty fridge. It was huge compared to what we'd gone to look at - a Fairline Targa 27, but that was far too small for cruising the Thames for 2-3 weeks at a time.

Hmmm! saw Soggy Dollar when I was bringing my boat home last week. Didn't pay a lot of attention to her other than noticing the name

Re: 30DS

There are loads of them for sale last year every marina had 2 or 3.Nice boats with loads of room.Mostly petrol around 30k.Easy to resell but you must buy right. The number of 30ds for sale means you are in a strong positon and can poss get one for 25K or less.More than enough to dump that rusty fridge over the side.Having had a 23 ft regal my own experience tells you to go for the bigger of the boats even if it is not as "flash" it also means you will not develop a permanent stoop either .

Just lets say the best boat in the known universe starts with the letter P
